Right, well I bought this because I thought I had a problem I didn't, it's off of a 2004 car that's done 47k miles, these are individually ratio'd so will only work "properly" on the model listed.

It's 3.07 Final Drive Ratio

They're pretty hard to get hold of, but I'm looking for just under what I paid as I just want to get it sold really:

£250 plus postage/collection is ideal.

Hi,

no interest in the Diff., but I am interested to know what was the fix on your noise, so many people don't give the feedback when they fix their car, it's a shame because people genuinely try to help and then are left wondering ??

I'll post feedback when I collect the car, but it looks like a freak bearing failure, the bearing must have really failed in quite some way because I had a knocking/screaching/vibration.. way more affect on the car than just the usual bearing failure.

woah ! that's not good , what year & mileage is on your car, I thought the days of diffs. wearing out was long gone :(

Mine (on an ///M) was replaced under warranty at about 69k miles.

:o that's outrageous ! maybe I better change the diff. oil on mine to help prolong it's life !!

To be fair, I hadn't noticed anything wrong with it, but whilst it was as the dealers for something else they told me they'd applied for warranty authorisation to replace it as it was a bit 'grumbly'.

Didn't argue as it was going to cost me nothing

Well today my car is having a new diff fitted because the old one has a backlash problem suspected be be caused by worn shims (which you can't buy on their own).

So if it is the shims, if yours are undamaged and if they fit mine (mine is the 3:46 ratio) then theres a chance I could use yours for parts. As you can see there are lots of 'ifs' but might be worth holding onto it for parts rather than binning it because you never know!

Stupid fucking car.

Cost to have it replaced with a new one at BM? £2022

That's with money taken off because they take the old one in "part exchange".

Wankers.

Tom, you not found a second hand replacement?

Once I've got mine back I don't mind stripping it down for you, photo'ing what I find, and you can see if it's what you need?

Thanks very much, like I say it's a slim chance but you never know. I'll get it sent off to a specialist first to see whats wrong :)

The diff works perfectly, the only thing is it makes a metallic clank when it takes up slack at low speed, for example 1st- reverse, 1st-2nd, or just accelerating in 1st off a speed bump. I've had the splines greased and the coupler inspected (both common solutions to my symptoms from reading around on here) but that hasn't fixed it so it's new diff time.

It's annoying because the 3:46 ratio in my 3.0si is much rarer than than other Z4/E46 diffs so I've had to fork out £375 for the part alone from a breakers. I just pray to god this solves the problem!

I'm hoping the old one can be patched up and re-sold to recoup some of my losses.

No it isn't???

Look down to z4, 3.0i

Hmmm, looking on real OEM it is saying 3.46, weirdness.

EDIT:

3.46 is auto!!!!!

3.07 is manual

Just phoned BMW for clarity, it's 100% 3.07

After seeing two mechanics, it's nothing to do with the diff, and it's a rather embarrassing solution indeed. I'll elaborate when I've got the car back, promise ;)

Now buy my diff? :D
