e85 3.0si oil consumption question

Hey everyone,

I got a yellow oil top-up warning light on my 2006 z4 (which unfortunately does not have a dipstick). When I checked the oil level electronically, it said to top up by 1 litre of oil. However, I got my car fully serviced about 2500km ago. This sort of consumption seems excessive to me, it has no oil leaks of any sort.

Is this normal? Or could this be the oil level sensor going whack?

The engine has done 1186xx kms (73k miles)

Gummed up ccv systems can cause heavy oil consumption, remove the disa & check if the inlet manifold is oily inside.

That doesn't sound excessive, it's not abnormal for larger engines to consume oil at the rate of 1l per 1k; I've owned plenty of cars that have drunk oil at that rate (and worse), yet still been within manufacturer's tolerances.
 
Which oil was put in the car when it was serviced?

Did you check the oil level after it was serviced to make sure it was at the correct level?

For the past 7 years I've been using Millers Nanodrive which is now Millers Performance. Never had to top up the oil at all.
 
I agree with Skelters - Always check oil level post servicing to make sure it is correctly filled. I check the oil pretty much every time I go out in the car at least weekly.
You are correct that consumption sounds high at 1 Lit in 2500Km -
My 3.0si uses less than 1 liter in 10000 miles - but I always keep it topped up - as soon as the oil indicator shows - - down form full I add 200ml.
I run only Castrol products and change oil annually covering 8-10K miles
 
That isn't unusual oil usage for a BMW N52 engine like yours, although it is on the high side based on the 4 I've had (2 in Z4s and 2 in 3 Series).

But as someone said it may not have been full to the top mark when it was serviced. I also made a point of checking the oil level most times I used the car - if nothing else for the peace of mind of knowing the sensor was working!

After adding a litre it would be worth checking the oil level regularly to see what rate it is getting through it.

Good advice from Smartbear about the ccv too!

I checked the oil level after the service, it said it was at the right level. But then after that, I didn't bother checking the oil for the past two months until I got a yellow oil top-up warning light.

I've topped it up now and will be using my car less for short trips, as I heard that burns a lot of oil and is bad for the CCV.

Castrol Edge. Yes, I did check the oil level once it was serviced, but that was about two months ago :|
