E85 3.0 m54 intermittent rpm drop/nearly stall on cold start

Hi everyone, hope you’re all doing well.

I own a 2003 bmw e85 z4 3.0 with the m54 engine (UK spec).

Recently my car has developed a bit of on odd problem where sometimes (usually when cold starting) when first starting the car the revs will drop after a few seconds to the point where the engine feels like it’s about to stall, before recovering back to normal idle where it runs smoothly.

The engine runs smoothly other than this, idling fine, pulling strongly and smoothly to redline through all the gears and is very happy to rev out.

My and my friend recently took out and cleaned the DISA valve and idle control valve to try and rectify this (which both were covered in carbon), but unfortunately this has not worked. This really confused as the intermittent nature of the problem made me think it must be one of the valves occasionally getting stuck due to carbon build up and taking a moment to free itself, but apparently not.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, would love to put this little problem to bed.

Cheers,
Max

Hi Max

Do you have an OBD2 scanner for your car?

If so, with a hot engine at idle write down and post her the following live data PID's:
- Short term fuel trim (STFT) for both banks
- Long term fuel trims (LTFT) for both banks
- MAF value in g/s.

Hi!

My mate has one so I will do this ASAP and post here.

Thanks for the help!
