E85 2008 2.0i - Clutch or Flywheel

Only when the car is cold, sometimes, not always, when engaging first gear, the car can seem to lurch or judder. This is immediately resolved by dropping the clutch and increasing more revs, then re engaging the clutch or slipping the clutch a little. Once the car is warm this does not happen.

I was thinking it needs a new clutch but I don’t have any clutch slip and still engages ok.

Therefore is this lurching the dual mass flywheel nearing the end of its life, or something else.

Yes, i have had this for over 10 years on my 2005. The clutch still works perfectly. I just give it a bit more revs and a little slip when cold.

Classic case of worn dual mass flywheel. Originally fitted to diesel cars to remove roughness they then started using them on petrol cars for no good reason, in my opinion.
They can weaken over time and give that juddering on take off. Don't have it on my z4 but day car has it. Comes and goes so just think of it as a characteristic of the car. Unless it becomes horrendously bad just ignore it, seems it can go on for years with no ill effect

I was under the impression that this was caused by the CDV, but according to everyone's answers seems that I will just ignore the problem too. Mine does it since bought it used, but has never been an actual problem.

Happens on mine a little but as said on here, more revs sorts it. Also if facing down hill I use 2nd gear, then it doesn’t do it. In the 3 years I have been on here this comes up quite often, there’s an old thread going back to when the cars were new and they were being sorted under warranty. But then still doing it.

How many miles on the car?here’s mine after 100,000 miles,it’s a while your in there change as I’m doing a underbody restoration job on the E91 before i do the same on the E85 in the future.
