E85 2.5si several issues

Hi all, hoping for some advice/help. I have a e85 2006 2.5si with 63,000 miles.

The car has three error codes:
2A87 Outlet Vanos Variable control test
2E82 Electrical cooling pump - switch off
2E84 Electrical cooling pump - communication

The car on start up can occasionally emit a lot of blue smoke for a couple of seconds then it goes away. Generally replaced by white smoke/steam which isn’t alot but seems to still be present after a 15 minute drive. Its cold just now in Scotland so i’m hoping its steam. There doesn’t seem to be a coolant leak.
I had the CCV Valve changed 2 months ago and i’d hoped that would have fixed the blue smoke issue.
It uses around 1 litre of oil every 1,000-1,500 miles
Sometime the revs on idle jump between 500-1000, other times it sits nicely at 800. Around 3,000 miles ago I had the bonnet open for around 2 minutes in the rain when i was filling it up with oil and the engine bay got very wet. It was since then that the idling issues started.
Under full acceleration occasionally it can hesitate and it doesn’t feel like i have all the power, other times it fine.

In the past 200 or so miles every time I start the car the engine fan comes on and stay on for 4-5 minutes.

All the spark plugs and coil packs are working fine.

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
Is the car being used on a daily basis and if so, how long for?
Just info that others more expert than myself might find useful.
Cheers,
Robert.

Electric coolant pump is on its way out, get it changed ASAP before it leaves you stranded, this is an early indication

White smoke is normal for this time of year, Blue smoke not so much , could be related to the PCV system but unlikley if you have had it changed

It uses around 1 litre of oil every 1,000-1,500 miles

this is normal for a 6 cyl BMW petrol engine- anything up to 1000 mile per litre is classed as acceptable in a BMW Service bulletin.

Hi, i use the car 2-3 times a week to get to and from work. Each return journey is around 20-25 minutes of mostly motorway miles. I bought the car 4 months ago from a gentleman that barely used the car. When he drove it, it was mostly very short runs. Thanks

Thanks so much for your detailed response. I’ll look in to the electric coolant pump.

I also forgot to say the fan comes on when i start the car and stay on for 4-5 minutes. Only started happening 200 miles ago.

This is a great help :)

The fan switch wire is notorious for corroding on the connector, have a look at the plug where it goes into the fan assembly and check for broken wires, its the smallest thinnest wire of the lot :)

Just make sure you don't buy your new water pump from BMW as they charge over £500 for them. :o

The original pumps were made by Pierburg and can be found for about half that in other places.

Hi all, whats the difference, or is there a difference to a ‘water pump’ and a ‘engine coolant pump’? Thanks
