E85 2.0 CCV question

Hi all, first time posting, some great info on here so hopefully you can help me out. I have a 2007 with N46B20B engine that appears to have the typical CCV ISSUES (intermittent puff of oily smoke, rough running, oil use). I was going to have it replaced but have been told it’s the later version contained in the valve cover. I can’t find much info on this type, is there something within the valve cover, is it just the diaphragm that needs replacing or is there a catch can conversion or something….any info appreciated! Thanks

Check out Realoem parts site using last seven of your Vin number and take a look at the diagram and part numbers list for what you car is fitted with https://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/select

I replaced my 2.5 using a kit from ebay and its been fine but a faff to change had to lift the intake manifold to get it fitted.

Thanks, have tried that and under the crankcase ventilation it shows “No parts found matching your car”. Even in the valve cover it doesn’t show a similar one mine (have attached an image of mine). I can see the hose connecting valve cover to inlet manifold but nothing else.

Different set up than my 2.5, take a look at this parts diagram to check yours out
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/showparts?id=BZ12-EUR-06-2007-E85-BMW-Z4_20i&diagId=11_3943

Might need taking apart and cleaning.

I'm no expert on the N46, but yours definitely is the one with it contained inside the cover. I believe, but don't quote me on it, that you change the whole top cover.
Not many specialist 2.0 tinkerers on here sadly.
[ref]tug[/ref], can you help at all?

I think you might be right enuff_zed. I can’t work out what’s inside the valve cover , I might try changing the diaphragm in the top circular valve and the pipe and see what happens unless anyone else knows any different?

Sorry can't help with this one, never had any similar problems with mine. Although i have this in my spares box if any good.

Found this on BMW TIS site for testing crankcase pressure.

Measuring engine internal pressure (N40 / N42 / N45 / N45T / N45si / N46 / N46T / N43)
Special tools required:
• 11 9 880

Necessary preliminary work:
• Follow the diagnosis instruction for pressure testing.
• Check engine oil level.
Note:

Create tube 8x13 mm of length 70 mm.
Open oil filler cap .
Insert special tool 11 9 880 hand-tight into oil filler neck opening.
Connect low pressure line (2) to diagnosis connection of Integrated Measurement Interface Box and hose section (1).

Connect tube (1) to special tool 11 9 880 .
Start engine and run at idle speed.
Order number vacuum hose (IMIB accessories) 81 31 2 468 782 (previously: 81 31 2 357 800 and 81 38 2 201 924 respectively)
Different fault patterns as example:
0.97 bar Ambient pressure.
0.95 bar Engine internal pressure normal.
If the deviation is significantly greater than -0.04 bar, the engine ventilation system is faulty.
0.80 bar Pressure control valve faulty.
If the deviation is significantly greater than +0.04 bar, the engine ventilation system is clogged.
1.07 bar Clogged ventilation system, e.g. iced up, contaminated or kinked vent line.

Finally found some info on the ccv system fitted to my z4. Have posted link below to help anyone else who has the same system. The oil separator is built into the valve cover as suspected but I think the info from bmw that the whole valve cover needs replacing may be due to the diaphragm and spring valve not being available separately from BMW. I’ll replace the diaphragm and the pipe, which has a heater element in it and feedback if it works or not.

Be good to hear how you get on, as you seem to have identified a gap in the forum knowledge bank

Actual Test page from TIS for Crankcase Pressure Testing. Obviously need some tube and a pressure gauge to do this.

When i removed the oil cap there did seem to be positive pressure in the valve cover, I didn’t measure it but did feel quite bad. Anyway I have now replaced the valve cover with one off eBay, not the cheapest ones either. There were a couple of tabs on the old one that didn’t match up with the new one but otherwise it looked the same, a quick buzz with a multitool sorted that issue out and the cover fitted perfectly. Have now been running it for a few weeks and had one big puff of smoke and since then nothing….not even on start up. Still get the odd rough running and misfire but that could easily be a coil pack. Does seem to run a lot better overall.
