E85 108 Wheel on E89

So, I recently purchased an E89.
It came with a choice of either the standard 17" wheels (which are currently fitted) or the E85 18" 108 wheels.

I have been given the choice of either set... Does anyone know if they are straight swap? Will they fit with no issues? I'm new to changing wheels and see so many numbers I don't know what it all means sorry haha!

To be honest, I don't know which I prefer the look of; but I am not really a fan of the wheels that are currently fitted. :tumbleweed:

How it sits atm.

Based on your photo the 17s look like Style 290 wheels - link here:- https://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/bmw_alloy_wheels/z4_e89_alloys/17_bmw_290_wheel_1417

Given that they are ET29 18 x 8J they will sit much further out in the wheel-arches than 108s which are an E85/86 wheel. Assuming the 108s are genuine BMW ones they are 8J x 18 ET47 fronts and 8.5J x 18 ET50 rears so will sit much further into the arches.

The other issue with the 108s is they tend to suffer from lacquer lifting around the heads of the bolts on the split rims due to corrosion where the titanium bolts on the split rims meet the alloy rim, so you need to check that carefully because they need to be split for a proper refurb which gets expensive if a bolt splits or shears (I think they are about £5 each, and there are 25 on each wheel)!

Which is why I sold my 108s while they were still in good condition, and got some E89 18" 295s that would fit your car really well. (Much better than 108s).

But now I need to sell my E86, depending on where you are I might be up for a deal to swap those 108s for my 295s if you were interested.

Bear me in mind if/when you get around to moving on the 295's please....

Mr Tidy's idea sounds like it would suit you both. His wheels look good (in my opinion), suit the E89, and he will get a set of E85/E86 suitable wheels in exchange. Don't know what sort of money would need to change hands, but the end result should look good.
Otherwise there are plenty of aftermarket options out there, but then you're probably looking at spending even more money going down that route.

295s work well on the E89, both practically and, in my opinion, aesthetically. They don't have a reputation for cracking, Pirelli P Zeros protect their edges well and they clean easily.

I'd love to, but the issue is the 295s are in excellent condition (thanks to IRD) and I need a good set of wheels with tyres for when I advertise it. So I'd really only be considering a deal that would give me some good 107s, 108s or MV2s. Ideally 108s as that is what my car had originally. Now if you've got a set of those...…………..!

I've now obtained both sets of wheels. Haven't actually picked them up yet but I'm based in Cardiff, South Wales.
As far as I can tell they look like the genuine wheels but like I say, haven't actually picked them up yet to fully check them over and I've seen lots of reports of corrosion, but these seem to be clean enough.

I agree, they do look a lot more appeasing on an E89. Forgive my naivety but I assume they are a straight swap onto the car?
I would definitely be interested, thank you.

The wheels as pictured above currently fitted to the car have obviously been spaced, too, as they sit a bit weird so I assume(?) the spacers are from where the previous owner had the 108's fitted?

I have a set of 107's, but they're bolted to my E85 which is hopefully leaving with it's new owner this morning 😁

If for whatever reason you end up with the E89 wheels going spare then please give me a shout

I borrowed a set of e85 elipsoids for my e89 when my 326’s cracked (again) they seemed to disappear inside the arches, looked rather odd,

Handsome car. Clever wheels.
Thanks I replaced them with 230s and non runflats which look very similar to the 295s but are an inch bigger. Mr Wilks spotted them on EBAY.33BBD198-BFB2-4467-BD83-6F8340D9BC57.jpeg

I fitted 108s to mine for a day while my tyres were changed...

How did the 18"s drive?

I only drove it from Stuartt’s home to the mot station & back, Stu was with me so i kept the rolling burnouts to a minimum :D
I was just grateful to have wheels that weren’t in pieces.
Rob

I know the shortcomings of 108s but I had them on my E85 and liked the look. Somehow they don’t look right on an E89. roll:
