E5 to E10 Petrol Debate

I'me sure there are lots of views on this but would be interested to here comments on the fact we have no choice but to accept the new fuel degradation, are Z4 owners happy to use E10 ?? The Gov. website says no problems with BMWs post 2000, if your worried stay with the Super (97 Octane), trouble is, many of the Petrol Stations around me are constantly selling out of it so may have no choice but to use it when the change comes in.
 
I've been reading up on this a bit as I'm worried about the longevity of the fuel lines, filter, tank etc.
I am going to trust BMW on and accept their word that our Zeds will run on this stuff but I've definitely found myself going to 99 more than I used to.

At the end of the day, I don't think there's a way to know what sort of damage (if any) a higher ethanol to petrol ratio is going to do to older cars.
 
It's been used successfully in Germany for a decade, so why would we would have problems with the same fuel? Plus, you've probably been using E5 for a decade without noticing any detrimental effect!

The issue I have if I ever need to use E10 in normal unleaded is the lower MPG you get due to the ethanol content - so if you get 10% worse MPG or less power from the fuel, you might as well pay extra for the super unleaded....assuming it's not sold out.

Either way, a few gallons to get you home or to the next super unleaded will make no difference - even a few tankfuls is unlikely to make any difference in cars built for this fuel (which most have been since the early 2000s).

However whilst is does remove a small percentage of emissions, it also benefits landowners to plant crops used only for bioethanol, to the detriment of food crops...and they're also removing woodlands to do the same...so the end result may be a saving in exhaust emissions at the cost lower global emissions absorption.

Fuel mileage will be maybe 2% worse with E10 versus E5.

I’m probably starting to sound like a broken record now- I have been running full E85 for years in one of my Z4Ms and 3.0i. I only recently swapped out the fuel pump, and that was to increase capacity rather than as a result of a casualty.
 
I'm going to forge blindly ahead using whatever fuel I can to get as many petrol miles in as possible before all we petrol-heads become vilified and stoned to death with worn out EV batteries. :D

This! Enjoy anything that combusts while you still can!

I think Brazil uses a much higher mix of ethanol (E20-something?) and their cars seem to be doing ok with it.
 
I posted a question about this a couple of days ago on the problems section. I filled up with E10 fuel at a Shell station and car drove fine. However after stopping for lunch the car displayed the yellow engine light which then stayed on . I havent code read the fault yet but imagine it will show a Lambda sensor problem. However it seems strange that I had for the first time put E10 fuel in. So is it a coincidence or is the engine telling me it is not sure about the fuel which it doesnt recognise. If so other Zeds might start throughing up error codes when first using E10 fuel.
Hopefully resetting the error code will get rid of the issue and cars management system will adapt.

There won't be a shortage of ammo then, there will be plenty of dirty batteries laying around, I would have thought.

I had the CEL on my Focus a week or two ago, P0420 which is cat/emissions related. Reset it and has been fine since, after a few hundred miles. No noticeable performance or economy issues. Might have been the car's first introduction to E10 causing a bit of a shock, although I have no idea if I even filled up with E10 (I don't pay much attention to the pump!). It might just be that my cat or an O2 sensor is screwed - point is you may be right however, if you are, there would likely be thousands if not millions reporting the same issue over the next few weeks. Coincidences do happen.
 
This topic has come up a few times lately!

It's a non-issue for anyone with the N52 engine (or the S54, I don't know about the others though) because BMW recommended using 98RON fuel whenever possible. So that means Super Plus which is only E5, or E0 for Esso in many parts of the UK.

And I'm sure someone outside of the UK said he had been using E15 in his Z4 for a while with no issues because that was the best he could get!
