E46 M3 vs Z4M power outputs?

I guess this might have been covered before but just reading through some technical manuals for our engines and it states our cars make less power/torque than the E46 M3, anyone know why?

Power output E46 M3:
1. 333 hp at 7900 rpm
2. 355 Nm of Torque at 4900 rpm

Power output M Roadster/Coupe:
1. 315 hp at 7900 rpm
2. 340 Nm of Torque at 4900 rpm

yeah as above...

the S54B32 engine in the Mcoupe is actually the later variant which also found its way into the E46 M3 CSL

OK found a Dyno before and after for OEM Z4M and with Super Sprint Exhaust.

Say's 343Hp :)

Though they actually measured 355.9 ps on the OEM results.

Definitely 338bhp or 343hp. The US version makes less power. Someone more knowledgeable than me will explain why but I think it was to do with the exhaust/manifold to comply with US emissions laws.

Correct...

Can't trust those crazy Americans with too much power!

There's no-one from,over the pond on this forum.......is there? :D

WLH is :poke:

UK spec is (according to the manual - and a bit of conversion for HP/PS)...

1. 252kW / 338hp (SAE) / 343ps (DIN) at 7900 rpm
2. 365 Nm of Torque at 4900 rpm

The U.S. spec was rated at 330 bhp. Some of the difference has to do with SAE versus DIN rating system.

The Z3M coupe with the S54 was rated at 315 bhp.

The U.S. cars have four cats - two in the exhaust manifolds, two small ones in the section 1. The Euro models have two large cats in the section 1.

I did read somewhere the air intake on the Z4M is not as good as the E46, so they often don't make claimed power - one possible reason Evolve/other airboxes are very effective on the Zed

thats not totally accurate.... the us cars have smaller cats YES... but we talking less material of a couple inches... if both cars had catless headers id bet my bottom dollar power would be as close to identical. Its the added cats in the headers for the US cars that means an overall significant increase in Cat material between the 2 setups. But if you compare euro to us section 1 the cats are defiantly smaller but by no means is it a large difference... However that particular cat section looks to be rather restrictive as the cat material is dense and long as far as CATs go.
