E46 help for my dad - burning oil

Hi folks

My dad has a E46 2.2 straight six (2002 320Ci), 107,000 miles and it is going through oil like water - after about 1600 -2000 miles it needs topping up. There are no leaks, everything else is fine, it just drinks oil. Local garage is not sure.....any of you have any suggestions? The engine is clean, just seems to drink the oil....

Cheers Z-ers

What colour is the exhaust gas? if its quite blue / black the valve stem seals might be on the way out..this allows the engine to burn a certain amount of oil.....

We'll go and check...he hasn't noticed anything, but I'll follow him for a bit, good excuse to go out in the Z :P

What about Oil Seperators - seems to be a bit on the web about that - could that be a cause (I don't know much about them)

That usage on a well used engine is fairly normal. If your getting 1500 miles per litre it's not worth worrying about IMO

sounds ok to me, my e46 325 i had a few years ago used to do similar useage for the mileage you have mentioned.

Check the CCV isnt broken....

At that mileage i would guess that it needs replacing..

As a quick test, remove the oil cap with the engine idling.Place your hand over the oil filler hole and feel for vacuum.. If the palm of your hand gets sucked onto the oil filler hole the CCV is broken..

Hi there. Ok, so with filler cap removed there is a slight 'suck' on the palm when it's fully covered. Is this a sign of a faulty CCV. If so, what is it, and is it a big job to replace? :?

And feels exactly the same 'suck' as my Z, which is fine....so doesn't sound like the CCV is faulty?
