E 85 run flats/spare wheel

Planning to get a Z4 soon as the next ragtop and am curious about the tyres.
They seem to come with the dreaded 'run flats' as standard but underneath the boot floor there appears to be a dedicated space for a spare wheel.
Am I correct?
If the car does have run flats the first job will be to get normal tyres on it and a spare wheel, if there is a dedicated spare wheel space that will save filling up the boot with a spare wheel.

No, the space under the floor just houses the battery on a Z4.

Apparently there are E46 space saver wheels that will fit in the luggage space, but not hidden away.

I know my E86 has no space for a spare wheel, so expect the same is true of the E85.

But in anticipation of switching to non-runflats I have bought an E46 space-saver, jack and wheel-brace but they will take up quite a bit of boot space.

The only other option is a can of goo and a compressor. :lol:

OP, if you buy a 3 litre Z4 make sure you get at least a 17inch space-saver or it won't fit over the front brakes!

Just remember that although the space saver fits, you still need room for the jack and room for a big fat rear alloy wheel!

I’ve got runflats on the 35is (i don’t hate them either) but also carry a mini compressor and gunk, - my plan B

I’ve still got BMW cover as well because it hasn’t had its second birthday yet. Although from past experience, we had a sat nav problem whilst travelling through the Netherlands last summer and they were worse than useless, so I’m unsure if I have a solid plan C

For day to day I have a full size stock turbine wheel/tire in the boot along with an emergency tool bag that has a low profile jack that I found in a boat supply shop that plugs in cigarette port and a back up crank for it just Incase your battery goes flat. Granted there’s not much room for anything else other than a small duffle bag

if its a pre - facelift 16" Wheels will fit on a 3.0 - I have a temp set of 16s for in between wheel changes :lol:

It was mentioned earlier but not answered, for those going down the space saver route it's not really about will the spacer saver fit but will anything upto a 18 or even 19" wheel fit when shod with a 255 or 265 tyre. I pretty sure it will but can anyone confirm this?

I've run Renaults and our Z4 on normal tyres for years without a spare. The goo that comes with the emergency compressors supplied by most manufacturers is OK but messy to use and difficult clean out afterwards to repair the tyre properly. Holts emergency repair canisters are a great and cheap way to get you home, plus a compressor for top ups every few miles, I have 3 large cans in each car. The Holts sealant washes out with hot water so the tyre isn't scrap afterwards. The most serious one I've dealt with was a cracked rim on my Laguna GT, needed topped up every 3 miles and by the time I got home the tyre was in very poor condition.

Of course, this only works if the tyre is serviceable and not cut or shredded. So breakdown cover is also an essential.

I've transported an 18" rear wheel shod with a 255 tyre in the boot (and one in the front passenger) when selling to a forum member

Looks like it's going to be a space saver in the boot.
Maybe I will give the run flats a long trial before swapping them.
I had run flats on my Lexus SC a few years ago and they were truly awful.
I have now reached the age where comfort is paramount.

I carry one of these in all of my vehicles, along with a small compressor..



Have used them for years and gotten out of many sticky situations - I just add a cheap pair of mini side cutters into the kit, handy for pulling out the offending nail/screw. I can have a tyre repaired and back up in about 10 mins by the roadside.

They aren't "street legal" BUT the AA/RAC carry similar kits....

They DO work though, very well..

If your intending to get an E85 then you won’t want an extended trial either on an E89 they ok!

Breakdown cover is plan A. Tyre gunk plan B.
Have you ever used the gunk? Its horrid and results in you falling off youre local tyre fitter's xmas card list.

Plus, the few times i have had a flat its always seemed to be on the motorway. Like f**k am i risking being juggernaught fodder sorting a flat on the hard shoulder (if youre lucky enough to have one and not be on one of the new fangled "smart" motorways - dont get me started on that bloody moronic idea!).

That's why I use the Holts stuff, it's washed out with warm water. The stuff supplied by Renault for use with their compressor is a laytex based substance which seals very effectively but can't be removed easily. The Holts stuff is not as reliable as a sealer but easily removed, that's why I carry a small compressor to top up as well.
