Dynamic driving modes

Hi all

Firstly loving the straight 6 in my manual 23i e89. I have been playing about with the dynamic driving modes and was wondering what they actually do

So heres from a 3.0 e89 manual

When I was driving I noticed the exhaust definitely sounded louder around the same speed/gears. Am I mad or does anyone know if this is "engine response". The dampers are also adjusted according to the manual so if I change to coilovers (with adjustable damping) I assume I will lose this effect? Apologies if the answer is a simple one...

thanks in advance

I think the dampers are o ku affected if you have the adaptive sports suspension added. I think this was an option. If you haven't you just get a faster throttle response, stiffened or more direct steering and yes, I think the exhaust sounds a bit better. I can't notice any difference between sport and sport plus, other than the traction is switched off in sport plus. I could be wrong though.

This is listed somewhere on another post with more detail than I can sum up right now.

Essentially, it changes steering weight and throttle sensitivity only, on Manual cars. On Auto cars it also changes shift points. On DCT Cars it also changes shift ferocity. On cars fitted with optional Adaptive Suspension it also changes damper settings/feel. It has no effect on the exhaust other than as a side effect of the changes to the throttle.

thanks fellas

ah i see so dampers affected only on adaptive suspension so i could change coilvers no probs ... good

just been to a custom exhaust place and they said theres an actuator which controls the sound of the exhaust at the backbox so I'm not going mad lol. They did say this gets clogged up and stops working eventually so all the more reason to change the exhaust :D

The exhaust actuator is for noise pollution control. Its shut at start up until revs near normal idle. It also opens and closes to tune the sound dependent on load and throttle. It rarely seizes but it can rattle in its mounting, I've already had an entirely new exhaust because of it.

oh dear. good info thanks. must sound amazing on your car :driving:

The exhaust valve actuator is only fitted to the 35i and 35is, ie the ones with two separate exhaust pipes, it wouldn't be fitted to Theivz 23i

that's weird I saw a cable going into the side of the back box which is what they showed me plus there's an increase in sound in sport mode ... I love it :D ... I'll try and get pics next time its up on the ramp

I will be losing that with a custom exhaust tho so noisy all the time

what can I say even my kids love noisy exhausts lol

actually Hillwalker you may be right - just had a quick look on realoem and theres no cable going into box ... it must be in my head :voodoo:

Definitely not one on the 23i I used to have one, but on the 35 there is a modification (Bodge job  ) known as the golf tee mod that can be done to keep the valve open hence more noise on start up and at low revs.

There maybe a smaller flap in the 23i exhaust as usually the car uses just one of the exhaust pipes until you give it some beans and the second flap opens, usually around 2500 rpm. Not only does it change the noise slightly it gives better performance through the mid to high revs range. At least this is what it's done on 2 of my BMs with a twin exhaust from the one box. Assuming it's the same set up, which I can't any reason for it not to be then yes you will hear a difference in the exhaust note over 2500rpm

No flappy things on my 23i exhaust.
The only problem with messing with exhausts is as I found on the MGTF.
Keeping the flappy thing open all the time created a terrible drone at motorway speeds.
So that little mod got reversed.

I think the tone of the exhaust on the 23i is just right. Not too loud(boy racer) but subtle enough to want to make you put your foot down when the top is down.
And when I hear my colleague pull away in her car and speed up the road, what a refined sound.

Unlike the new Jag. sports car which was way over the top the first time I heard that.

The only downer on the 35i version was when one pulled up next to me, all I could hear was it's flappy valve rattling away in the exhaust!

Well that's kak! For years BMW have been fitting the flaps to the twin exhaust systems, infact a lot of manufactures do. I like seeing the little reflection of it from my lights when I'm behind a car with it sitting in traffic. I'm a bit weird and like to pay attention to the exhaust pipes.

Yeah if it starts to drone for long periods of time it can start to give you a headache.
