DVLA

So I have a new (to me) car so under the new rules I must tax the car myself as the previous owner automatically surrenders any tax on the car for a refund. Now you can't do Direct debit by Phone so I'll go on line thinks me. The website gives you 3 options, use the V11 reminder form, use the V5C registration document for the registered keeper or the V5C/2 for new keepers. I click option 3 as I'm the new keeper and it asks me for the Reg No and the document No, I put them in and click "next".

"Sorry as you are not the registered keeper we can not verify that you hold insurance on this vehicle you will have to take your documents to the post office".

That's going to be the same for any new keeper so why even give the bloody option on the website :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

So this morning I take an hour to trip into town to go to the post office and get my road tax. After waiting in the usual lenghty que I finaly get to the desk.
Me:- Here's my documents can I set up a direct debit to pay my road tax please.
PO:- No
Me:- What do you mean "No" the website told me I had to come down here cos they can't do it on line and they don't do Direct debit by phone.
PO:-Well we can sell you 6 months or 12 months tax but we can't set up a direct debit, you can only do that if you come here with the V11 or the V5C in your name.
Me:- If I had either of those I would be able to do it on line and wouldn't be stood here like a lemon.

DVLA really haven't thought this new system through have they  .

I taxed mine on Saturday online via the monthly DD scheme using only the new keeper supplement. Are you sure your insurance has updated on the DVLA database and the car has valid MOT?

Sounds like they're working off the French model for bureaucracy & efficiency :D IE fuerkin woefully inept :P

It was a couple of days ago when I tried so I'll have another go.

Nope. Just tried again and it's having none of it :x

Have you checked the askmid website to see if your car is showing as insured?

I insured mine 9 days before i tried to do it online. I only waited to tax it as i didn't see the point in taxing it from the start of the month (Oct) for only 9 days use, would be a waste of a months tax. So instead taxed it from the start of Nov.

Thanks for the link. I've just checked and it's showing as insured. Maybe it's DVLA taking their time to update the records as I only got the car on the 28th.

New system is a total shambles - wife is having issues getting proof the car is taxed in her name- dealer did it on her behalf but has then not picked up the receipt - DVLA say records are not yet updated . Wife has a letter from the supplying dealership. now if the receipt was stuck in the window - The dealership would not have lost it .....

My automatic refund is completely wrong as well, out by about £90 ... :(

Now how do you chase that one ....

Ouch! The OH doesn't have a good word to say about DVLA they cock it up every time with her.

At least I have sold the hugely polluting M now and have bought an economy model car now with a much lower tax rate 8)

The hugely polluting M is totally worth the small fortune in tax - but I'm glad you're finding reasons to feel better about having sold it  :P

Just got mine today, but it's right £163.33 for 4 months. So no penalty on 12 months and sending for a refund 8)

The DVLA are a complete shambles. Taken me 6 weeks to get paid a VED refund on a car that I passed to a dealer on the 30th September. I sent them a letter a few days earlier with a completed V317 form to put my personal plate on retention because the dealer didn't want to deal with it on my brand new car and I followed up with a V14 form enclosing my old VED disc. After chasing them via Direct Messages on twitter they finally apologised for the delay blaming it on the 'cherished plate transfer'. I know they are advertising for more staff at Swansea. I nearly recommended that they should never have shut all their regional offices!

I did this too - bought the car on 25th October and taxed it on line November 1st without any difficulty. The previous owner won't receive a refund for the last six days of October so the DVLA cannot complain that the car was untaxed during that period...

You can only pay by direct debit on tax renewal if the car is in your name.

It's the same If you buy a car from a dealer they will charge you for six or twelve months tax and when you get your reminder you can tax on direct debit.

Interesting theory, as the car will not show as untaxed as it is still taxed by the previous owner. So why would you ever tax it in the same month - and how would "they" ever know who actually taxed it anyway?

The date of change of ownership will be electronically recorded at the DVLA as will the date of renewal of road tax. It would be extremely simple for the DVLA to automatically flag up those cars not re-taxed on the day of change of registered keeper and then issue automatic penalties.

Sounds like a perfect government IT project, will probably go live in 30 years :D

I know what you are saying, and yes - you would be right that they could. But do they do it now if you don't SORN the car nor tax automatically?
