DVLA…. Tax refund

If you have to tax a car shortly before selling it be sure to chase DVLA quickly if you don’t get a fast tax refund!…

Taxed my previous E85 on 1st April and registered the sale on the 5th April via DVLA website.

‘You are no longer keeper’ letter received a few days later, no tax refund.

DVLA website states up to 6 weeks.

Still had nothing so called them today - ‘’new owner hasn’t taxed it so we’ve held back your tax refund’’ - WTF!!!

‘I’ve made a note we’ll do this now… cheque in 4 weeks, that’s how long it takes’

So if I hadn’t have phoned you when would you have issued tax refund?…. ‘We wouldn’t have’ - Double WTF!!!!

You couldn’t make it up :headbang:

Some of the outdated policies at the dvla are laughable. I'm surprised a regulating body hasn't pulled them into the 21st century. My mother in law is having to re-apply for her lisesnce, which will take up to 90 days and the fee is only payable by cheque ffs.

How can some things be done online in a matter of minutes, yet other things (presumably handled by the same system) rely on such ancient methods and time scales
Boils my piss.

What is the relevance of the new owner re tax? So if they had sorned it, you would never get anything? Madness

And to add insult to injury, when you do get the refund (by cheque but they are quite quick generally) it will be 11 months' worth at best.

The new RFL rules are a brilliant way for the Gov to make loads of extra revenue by 'making things simpler' and having the 1st of the month as cut-off dates for all!

You tax your car on 1st April. Say £300. You sell it on 5th April. You get 11/12th back: £275.
The buyer taxes the car from 5th April...£300 until 31st March next year.

The above equals approximately £330 RFL paid for that car for a year. :o

They said to sell it so soon after taxing it was odd, as the new owner appeared not to have taxed it so we held back the refund?

I said, would it have been acceptable for me to not tax it and take the new ‘potential’ owner out for a test drive with invalidated insurance?…. Would that be less odd?

It seems I’m trying to commit some kind of weird ‘reverse’ fraud by taxing a car on the day the tax ran out in order to be able to then take the potential new owner for a legal test drive?…

I wonder how often do they do this and people just forget to chase it up?

Yes, it’s infuriating really… imagine trying to buy on the 1st of the month and sell on the last day of the month to reduce road tax

I tax my car by direct debit monthly. If you trade your car in during the first week of the month, do you get a refund for the remainder of the month or is that expecting too much?

Suspect you only get full months back.

No, if you start a new month you pay for the whole month. If you buy a car on the last day of the month you have to pay for the whole month

Last X5 I sold I waited until the last day of the month and the new owner taxed it from the first. No tax lost that way
