They still can't get it right :headbang:

On my 911, I could not allocate my private plate as the system could not recognise a surname that consists of two parts. It has to be done by post only and takes 10 days. Nicely double charged on insurance for changing the plate from private, to non and back again all within a week.

Roll forward 2 years and they STILL can not deal with this, so my son has the same fun with the insurance again as I took it out on the private plate against his car which now has to be assigned for a week to a random number before going back to a private plate.

Just change your name by deed poll... no more problem...

Well you could just omit the 'van' part of your surname - it would obviously still be you so there would be no 'attempt to deceive'

Via computer at the dealer or via DVLA send-by-post?

...but a double-barreled surname has a hyphen rather than a space (as in 'van Dyke') so, to the simple-minded DVLA input validation routines, still appears as a single 'word' rather than two words
 
The issue is the name as it is printed on the retention certificate. You put it on retention, they print the name, then when you take it off retention they no longer recognise the name ...

You could also circumvent it by keeping capitalisation but omitting the space and joining the two words e.g 'vanDyke' rather than 'van Dyke'
 
I thought you were from one of the 2 provinces of Holland, but if not then the Netherlands will be just fine :)
