dvdinmotion successfully coded!

Decided to go down the route of buying a d/kcan cable to have a mess about coding.

First thing done was the missus mini one D. She never had a proper OBC which always annoyed her. BMW wanted depending on which dealer between £200-£300 to enable it :|

Brought a £40 cable of ebay, plenty of reading guides on how to use ncs expert and daten files decided i would try on her car first. 5 minutes later full OBC enabled!

Now after a little more faffing around (its a tricky 1 enabling dvdinmotion) but again worked first attemp. Its easy once you get the concept of coding.

Just got to figure what i want to do next

Just be careful, BMW can tell you've accessed the car and they could use it against you if you're under warranty.

That would depend on if said access could be shown to have caused or contributed to the problem. Mods are excluded from warranties but it has to be connected. For example changing your wiper blades (a mod) would not stop you claiming on warranty for a blown engine..... still that won't stop them trying it on so as you said be careful.

On the subject of programming bmw dealer tells me there is programming they can do on new car to enable extra roof functions like open close in motion (upto 10mph) and close via key fob, awaiting details, not sure if this is a facelift thing or not but I'll post more when I have details.... they started off saying they could do this on 3 series and would check with new z4, they are checking more stuff out but those two functions are confirmed as possible.....

You would think so, but I know someone in the states that BMW disallowed an engine fault claim because they'd modded an unrelated car function via ODB. BMW's perspective was 'who knows what else you modified while you were in there'. Presuming they can tell if rather than what was modified in that instance.

Do what you want... but be mindful of implications is my point.

Bmw's uk new car warranty is pretty clear mod has to lead to the defect.

http://www.bmw.co.uk/en/topics/owners/service-and-maintenance/warranty.html

"Your BMW has been designed and built to extremely high standards to achieve optimum performance economy. Neither the Manufacturer, the selling BMW Dealer or any BMW Group company in the UK can be held responsible for modifications to the vehicle which lead to defects, unless those modifications have been approved by the Manufacturer, an Authorised BMW Dealer or a BMW Service Authorised Workshop."

Im not really worried about BMW finding anything.

If i need to take my z4 in for any work i can easily default the cic module back to its original state.

Sure if i f**k something up then its my problem and would just either hope BMW didnt spot anything or pay the price.

This is the reason ive not had mine remapped. A tiny modification to modules is hard to find and ur unlikely to totally mess things up if you understand the stages of coding.

A remap can be spotted quite easy, along with all the engine parts a remap can affect so if anything went wrong ie blown turbo they could easy say a remap is to blame.

Is this for the passenger? How do you watch a DVD in motion?

By crashing into the car in front!!!

It means the DVD will continue to play onscreen when moving. For the passengers benefit.

I like the sound of it, but just know I would crash!

I reckon if you ran over a pedestrian they'd lock you up having assumed you were distracted. Even if you weren't watching. I can see the headlines in the Sun.

There is a guy on YouTube selling a DVD which (allegedly) recodes the CIC to provide DVD in motion. A snip at $155!!!

I like many have, am installing a SmartTop which potentially infringes warranty but can be disabled for service work at the dealer.

Usually when you have an ECU remap the default state is saved and that can be restored before service and the the improved map put back after. Had it done on 2 previous cars (AMG E500 Sport and Boxster 3.2S) and noticed little real tangible performance improvement. Both were quick before and quick afterwards but wallet was considerably lighter. Not a good deal unless its a diesel which is a different scenario. Leave well alone, it's cheaper.

The main reason i done it was so the missus can watch stuff on longer journeys....and to prove i could do it lol.

I was close to buying the dvdinmotion cd but being a geek i liked the challenge of doing it myself

Trouble is with the best will and intentions in the world, if there's a film playing I defy anyone to not keep glancing at it and/or it holding your attention for a fraction of a second too long and that could lead to an accident. I wouldn't risk it.
