DVD drive/laser replacement?

So, I have come the think my laser is knackered and found a guide/parts on how to replace the laser in the drive.

My main issue is getting the drive out. I understand it involves a lot of trim removal (thanks bmw) ... is there an easier way of doing this? any shortcuts or pitfalls to avoid? Want to gauge an idea of how big a task this is before I start..

I have seen the guide/pdf but would like to get the opinion of those who have done it before!

have you spoke to these guys?

Thanks for that, doesn't look too bad?! And I'd rather replace the laser at much less cost than the whole nav unit and also worry about coding etc..

im keen to know about this as im sure mine is on its way out. it doesnt like the cold! if it goes below 8C over night it doesnt work till the cars warmed up :D

which of course i dont do by leaving it idling on the drive or by hard revving :) :poke:

dunno... cross reference it with the one on that german site. it looks like the one...

Was just about to buy a laser when I found a lot of information regarding BMW actually replacing units for about £90? Can anyone verify this?

Also someone on another forum recommended this (double resistance model)

http://www.logictoyz.com/ld-laser-diode-laser-lens-and-laser-module/sanyo-sf-hd4-optical-pickup-white-cap-straight-line-double-resitors-sfhd4-s-type-car-dvd-laser-lens.html

Changed it on their mk4 in an x-4/5/6/something ... works fine!
