DVD drive diagnosis

Hi, I've just bought a Z4 Coupe and the sat nav screen doesn't work - it flips up but has a blank screen. Now I've read that its most likely the DVD drive which has the problem and is failing to communicate with the screen itself, so I have two questions:

  • Does the whole menu system run from the DVD? I would have thought the main system would be in the car's inbuilt memory, and the DVD would just be the navigation map and info. And the answer to this would mean the difference between the DVD being taken out for example and that stopping just the sat nav from working, but the menu system still appearing and working, vs the problem I have where screen doesn't even turn on.
  • And then secondly how can I diagnose the problem? Is there a wiring diagram I can use to test the voltage on the connectors to see if the drive and the screen are getting power?

The screen is connected direclty to the DVD drive, so yes if the DVD drive is at fault then nothing would appear on the screen.

I don't have a wiring diagram but have retrofitted nav. The main loom has a connector behind the left hand seat. This is disconnected and the nave loom connected in between. This then goes off to the DVD drive and to the screen.

You can get a drive for £100 so might be the easiest way of testing. If it's not that then you can sell it on.

Ok, well I’ve done the first test which is that the DVD has power and is able to spit out the DVD. Are the drives known for physically working in that sense, but still not sending the info or power to the screen?
