duplicate key

I've been quoted 110 pounds for a duplicate key including coding from BMW in teeside. Is this a good price, or does anyone know of indy (if poss) in north east that can supply a key and code it for significantly less. If there is not much diff in price id rather stick with the reassurance of dealer. I nearly bought a blank key off eBay but saw somewhere that it needs to come with a key number or something...... :!:

Hi, a new key cost me £131 in all in from the dealer, including programmimg (all 30secs of it). So if your is + VAT then about the same

Not sure about key numbers etc.. but it is a proprietary key with a rechargeable battery in it that charges when its in the ignition (not to mention its progammability), so I suspect you may struggle to find an aftermarket one that fits the bill 100%, but I've been wrong before!

Sounds expensive. The eBay type keys are usually blanks that need programming aren't they? If it's possible then might work out cheaper.

Just been looking...they all seem to be key cases, so lord knows whats missing.....the only kosher key I could find seemed to be second hand as it would need "..a new blade and reprogramming"...

Looks like im gonna be held over the barrel by the dealer......... oh well, that's a lesson learnt for future purchases!

It's held over the barrel if you will.

The keys are in sets held by the central warehouse. 5 is your lot in the cars lifetime (so I believe) then it's a complete new set of locks for the car.

While you can take any key off ebay and programme it to open the doors only the oem has the transponder that matches the engine immobiliser.

So if you have a good transponder you could swap it into a new shell and even get the blade cut or wapped over.

Ask the dealer how much for just the key as you code it in the lock in a few seconds.....

cj, i only had one key given to me so no 'spare' transponder for the engine. I have a third key f0r my e39, looks the same style key as z4, was kinda hoping to be able to programme that key for the z4 with a new blade cut. But if i need a new transponder, then thats outta the question :(

Ok guys
i got a blank blade key of ebay with all the electronics inside over a month ago and done nothing with it yet .

i can easy get the blade cut to match my own key but my question is can the elecronics part be programed with out going to a dealer to do both doors and start the car or can only doors be done?

Sorry to high jack thread but hopefully the anwer may help others.

Read my post carefully - only the matching transponder from the original set can EVER start the engine. Just chuck it away and save your time, unless you have a burning desire to be able to just open the doors and disarm it then sit in it :)

I disagree cj i think a spare key would come in handy if only just to open the doors . if you lose your original key and only have one like i have at least you can get into the car if you lose your original . would make recover a lot easier and retrieve any personal effects or retrieve your frozen goods from the boot.

Probably getting the proper one would make sense as this is what you have to do in the long run.so totally agree with you on that one.

But for the small pittance i paid at least its a cheep emergency back up.

So if i read your post correctly you can program it to do door but not start the car ( my door lock does not work with the key i need to look at it )
Another reason why if it can be programmed to activate the lock it would help.

Do you know the sequence to do this as this would be of help until i can get the lock fixed and new key on order from the dealer?

That's why you should have a valet/emergency key too. The small plastic one, That can start the engine too. Seems 2 keys have been lost in the past.

For sure the spare has some uses if you can get it cut. I was being a bit tongue in cheek when I said 'chuck it'

Google it as there are lots of ways but try this (no idea if it works as my keys are just fine):

1.Get in the vehicle, remembering to close all the doors and windows with both keys in tow. This allows the programming process to commence properly and allows the electronic signals to remain inside the vehicle. Make certain you are sitting on the driver's side.

2.Insert the working key into the ignition. Once the working key is in the ignition, turn the key to the first position. Within five seconds, turn the key back to the initial position (position zero). Perform this step swiftly.

3.Remove the working key. After quickly turning the ignition, remove the initial key from the ignition quickly. Now the electronic system is prepared to program a blank BMW key.

4.Program the new BMW key. To begin the actual process and program a blank BMW key, hold the blank key near the top of the car in your left hand. The remote receiver antenna is closest to this point and allows for better reception.

5.Repeat holding the unlock button and the lock button. On the blank key, repeat this process of holding down the unlock button while pressing the lock button three times quickly. Then, release the unlock button and the doors should lock and unlock. This confirms the programming of the BMW key.
