Dumb air con question

Hi All
I'm reading my manual regarding air con and it says in Auto mode it adjusts if the hood is open.
My question is : what if the hood is up and the windows are open? Does it adjust then? If it doesn't where is the off button for it?

THanks
Matt

As far as I know it only adjusts when the roof is open. As for the off button - you use the fan speed control and press th elect hand button until it goes off. I only ever have the fan in the ‘speed 1’ position so a single press switches it off.

Is there any point to having the aircon on when the roof is down. I always switch mine off at that point, as I thought aircon needed enclosed spaces to work properly.

All depends on the weather. If it is a hot day then driving around with the top down is not that different to just sitting in the sun with maybe a bit of breeze near your head (depending if you have the wind deflector and how tall you are). Sometimes it's nice to have a blast of icy (and dry) air blowing on you!

I've been on trips in the US where it's been so hot the roof in the rental convertible has had to go up or you'd melt!

Air con all the way...

Top down, Air con on or Heat on :D Depends on the condition. Anyway, I never had mine in auto with the top down cause I am usually blasting it to feel the coolness :) So, even though I am chiming in, I have no useful info for you in this thread. :driving:

Yes i was puzzled too how the air con would work in a non enclosed environment :D

I never use the air con. Rather drop windows or roof. I may have it on for a very short time if windows steam up on cold wet days.

Just to clarify air con or climate control.

I cant see any change in the climate control fan speed in auto and middle fan speed selected if the roof is up or down, but like previously stated if its cold then push the fan up to full and turn up the temp to 25. If warm turn it off either by taking out of auto and or dropping the fan speed right down. You can turn it off totally (press the left button a few times).

Sometimes the fan is blowing full when its a bit warm in the car and returning to the car in a hot day, The old models never did this. Also the old models had more control in auto and you never changed the fan speed it would direct the air flow where it was needed.

Dont forget to use auto air intake if using air con so recycle the air and not to have fresh air entering or you will loose the cooled air (bit pointless cooling the environment), but some use ac even with the roof down, I would rather have a the wasted petrol as a beer when I get in and relax in the garden. The air con takes over 300rpm load so probably 4 to 8 mpg thats 10 to 20% loss.

The fan speed does work on the auto stop start though, Im liking this works 100% for me so far.

I think its in the manual, but in Auto mode, the fan buttons don't necessarily increase or decrease the fan speed, they increase or decrease the intensity of the air conditioning. :? Only one of the 5 green leds ever lights up.

If you take Auto off, then the leds operate differently, and several of the leds can light up to show which of the 5 fan speeds you have selected.

I have had the AC on and directed into the footwell to cool my feet and legs with the top down :D

.......I was also told by BMW that climate control doesn't work without the AC on :idunno:

Me too!

climate control does try to work without ac, but if its hot the only thing it can do is to blow hot air in your face, not good.

So turn AC off, and the fan off and drop the roof and windows.

But hay nothing wrong with keeping your legs cool lol.

I had cold ac air blowing at me top down on the continent last year. It was HOT outside so there was no mistake that it was chilled air!
