Dual cone intakes?

Could someone please explain to me the benefits of DCIs over the stock intake? All i see is conflicting information online.

Some say its worse than stock causes heatsoak and just looks good, others say it is a considerable flow improvement over stock?

Anything that picks up air from under the bonnet is going to be compromised, cold air is better for the engines power output :thumbsup:

The BMS dual cone intake is the budget end of the market, and the above comments are true.

However at the higher end of the market AFE MAGNUM FORCE - is isolates heatsoak and only cold air - but at 4 times the cost :thumbsdown:

But they sound great, had one in my old 335i

Benefits:
Able to intake more air into the engine + fuel = MORE POWER
Colder Air is condensed = more Oxegen = more power
Warm air is less condensed = less Oxegen = less power
Great sound - warm or cold air

Take that thread with a large pinch of salt.
N54tech is owned by Terry Burger who runs Burger motorsports. Burger motorsports aka BMS make the DCI in question.

IMO just keep the stock airbox unless you are going to get a proper cold air intake. There's plenty of people who've done test on DCIs and shown there to be no benefit. Some show 1 or 2 bhp increase, others show 1 or 2 decrease.
 
Drive the car with no air filter, then try it with.
If you notice no difference, surely any other filter will make no difference.
Save your money, just replace the stock filter more often.
I use a K and N but i think it's more trouble than it worth as you have to be careful not to over oil it and at least with a paper filter, debris will fall off and not get stuck as it does with an oiled filter.
And oil might get on the air flow sensor so i clean that often.

That thread is very interesting, but also from someone that tries to sell his own product. (and the 2 situations they've tested are I think very limited; an 8 min stationairy test (which barely heats the engine) and one (1) 40-110mph sprint).
Its also interesting to see why ignition advance varies with both runs on a sidenote.

On the other side you have literally every performance car maker that uses an intake contraption that sucks air directly from outside and sometimes go to extensive lenght to do so. Not only in performace cars on the road but also cars on track,
So its Ferrari's/Lamborghini's/koenigseggs/Pagani's/bugatti's/AMG's/BMW's/McLaren's/Porsche's/Audi's/Aston martin's/Corvette's/Lotus'/Noble's/Alfa's/jaguar's/Maserati's/Nissan's/Subaru's/etc word/opinion against BMS' opinion.
 
Heat soak from air filters in the engine bay is less of a problem on a turbo charged engine than with an NA, due to the intercooler. As others have said you'll only gain a few BHP at most with a good one, and a bad one may even lower it!
