DTC

Hi all.

Just purchaced my first Z4 on a 53 plate :D looking through the forum and have found some very good info on my car.

what i am unable to find is info on the DTC,
my question is;is it normal to have to engage the DTC every time the ignition is switched on?

I thought that once the DTC was activated,it would stay so untill the switch was turned off

When ignition is turned off and back on the system always defaults to DSC. It's a safety thing. If you want to change to DTC then you always have to press the button again. Personally I wouldn't really want it any other way - I can have the safety of DSC all the time and switch on DTC when I want to have some fun ;)

I,m a little confused with DSC&DTC,if the system defaults to DSC when ignition is switched on,then should there be indication on the display showing DSC activated?

No, not really, I've never heard of a single car that tells you the traction control system is on by means of a light - generally a light only appears on the dash when you turn any sort of system off.

I think you're getting confused by the difference between DSC & DTC.

When you start the engine normally DSC is activated - for want of a better way of describing it, DSC offers the most amount of stability.

If you want to switch to DTC press the button briefly.

DTC offers less stability than DSC (again for want of a better way of describing it), it is effectively a sub system of DSC. With DSC off and DTC on you'll find you can spin the wheels (generally not possible with DSC on).

Finally, if you want to switch the whole lot off, then press the button for about 5 seconds (I think). You'll then have no DSC or DSC activated and can do what you damn well like. Crash most likely. :!:

That explains it then, and very well to thanks" hype "for your insight.as said previous I,m a newbe to this, all help is appreciated

Press the button briefly and it turns the traction control off.

Hold the button down for 5 secs and it turns the stability control off.

Simples :)

(wouldnt advise you turn the stability control off at all, unless you really know what your doing  )

The first step, DTC, is just DSC but at lower road speeds the traction control effect is reduced. I think between 40-55mph the traction control comes totally back into force as if you were running DSC.

The whole dtc/tcs/esp systems on the Z4's annoy me really.

To get to play you want ESP off, but then with ESP off you lose the DTC's wheel braking TCS, which also acts a little like a limited slip diff.

Ie, pull out of junction in the wet, boot it.
DSC = cuts throttle, not much happens.
DTC = tyre slips, then brakes, sending torque to other tyre too, that slips too, wooo, back end moving out, then ESP grabs it.
Off = tyre slips on inside, all torque goes to that wheel, accelerate away with one wheel spinning loads while the car remains fairly stable.

What it really needs is DSC mode is the same as DTC, no one NEEDS a car THAT safe unless they are a cretin. Then DTC can have wheel braking TCS only with ESP a bit less rigid, and then OFF should still have an element of wheel braking TCS (e-diff in essence), with ESP removed completely.

Now, to go through the ECU file and try work out how all that works, then change it :D
