DSP query/basic info

Hi guys,

I tried to install a Dension Gateway 300 but couldn't get any sound. After contacting Dension support they told me the unit does not work in systems with DSP (soemthing they failed to mention in their compatibility list :x ).

I then read on this forum that the Z4s use analogue DSP - so then why does this pose a problem for me? I would have expected an issue only if it was digital.

Please help!

Actually, older Z4's like yours should have a digital DSP system, which in newer cars like mine was swapped for an analogue setup. I'm pretty certain you'll be needing an analogue-to-digital converter to make it work. Such things do exist for the Z4 (because so many people have ended up in your situation - and presumably hence why BMW switched the system over to analogue in newer cars), but i'm not aware of where to get such a thing/how much it costs/etc. I'd imagine you'll find the majority of such info over in the Z series forum at www.bimmerfest.com.

Hope that's of some help.

Very helpful - thanks.

Do you know the schematics of the setup? I want to understand how the whole kit is wired up in order to better understand it.

Thanks again

I spoke to Dension's UK dsitributor (Progressive Consumer Electronics Ltd) and they told me I can get the kit to work if I buy a Analogue-to-Digital converter and wire this up to the input connector on the DSP unit.

Does anyone know much about this, or know where I can get such a converter?

Also, does anyone know if the cd-changer is pre-wired up in my car? I don't have a cd-changer, but am wondering if the wiring is already in place for future use.

Thanks

P.S. The guy at Progressive Consumer Electronics Ltd was very helpful over the phone and seemed to know his stuff. I would recommend them to anyone.

Have you checked BimmerFest? I'm sure i've seen talk about such converters there... Even if you get links to American retailers, you might get a part number that you can then search for from a UK-based supplier.

I can confirm that the CD-changer wiring is already in the car. Do you have nav? If so, i'd seriously recommend looking at something called Intravee II (www.intravention.co.uk) - it has to be ordered from the USA despite being made in the UK, and you also need to buy an Alpine KCA-420i iPod unit, but the setup makes full use of the nav screen, and the Intravee is updateable, which means fixes come along for any bugs (there are a couple) every so often. With the Intravee, you wouldn't need any convertors - just the Intravee II itself and the Alpine KCA-420i. Probably seriously worth considering.

Yep, I've posted a query on BimmerFest.

No nav unfortunately, would certainly have gone with the Intravee II + Alpine if I had.
