DSP Equalizer settings

So... after a lot of fiddling about trying to get the Z4's sound system to sound right I thought I'd take the scientific approach... after all, to measure is to know...

If your car is fitted with the DSP sound system (aka Carver, Logic7 or Top-HiFi) you can use the built-in equalizer to fine-tune the frequency response. But which settings would you use? I've used RightMark AudioAnalyzer to measure the sound system's frequency response. Based on an initial analysis, with the DSP disabled, a best guess as to what the equalizer settings should be was then made. Using these settings a new analysis run was performed, which in turn resulted in tweaks to the settings. After several iterations (enough to drain the battery  ) I reached my goal - an as flat as possible frequency response and vastly improved sound.

The resulting equalizer settings are:
80Hz: +1
200Hz: -5 (-9 is too much)
500Hz: -1
1kHz: 0
2kHz: +2
5kHz: 0
12kHz: +2 (+5 is too much)

Edit: after a testdrive I must say that the 12kHz setting sounds a bit harsh and should be a notch or two-three lower at +3 or +2.
Edit2: well, in practice the resonance bump @ 200Hz is indeed huge, but dropping to -9 does't leave enough bass, but -5 sounds about right.
I've got a feeling that while driving along, using higher sound levels than during measuring, the automatic loudness function kicks in. Main thing to take from all this is the huge resonance bump around 200Hz, and whereas you'd usually 'up' the 80Hz slider to compensate for the lack of low-end bass you actually need to lower the 200Hz slider quite significantly.

The blurb, or, how the measurements were taken:
The car used for these measurements is an E86, with M sport seats and extended leather (furniture influences frequency response :) ). Similar results will be achieved with the Z4M Coupe, but probably not with any of the roadsters, as they not only have another top, but also a very different trunk.

The measurements were made using RightMark AudioAnalyzer 6.2.3 and a Denon DM-S205 microphone. This microphone has an almost flat frequency response, with a 6dB/octave drop above 10kHz. The graphics have not been corrected to this 6dB/octave drop, and therefore show a larger drop off than is actually there.

In car measurements were taken at the left and right shoulder and several inches in front of the face. Three measurements were taken at each location and the (9) results then averaged.

Fader, balance, treble and bass controls were at their center level and the GAL (GeschwindigkeitsAbhängigeLautstärke) at 2.

The results, before and after:

If anyone would like to have their ragtop's sound system calibrated, you're welcome to c'mon over to Eindhoven.

Ah, unfortunately, you can't. The DSP does allow its sound programs (Jazz, Hall or Cathedral) to be set from a Business-CD head-unit, but the equalizer settings are only available when you also have a nav screen.

The DSP in the roadster is poor considering what it costs to spec it on the car. Our X5 has bog basic system and it sounds great compared to the roadster. Have messed about with the DSP settings and have set it to what sounds the best.

OP you need to find a roadster over there and do the same :)

The DSP (Logic 7) in the 1 series is far far better. It has 'music' and 'movie' DSP modes instead of jazz, concert & church but I don't use them often. You get graphic equaliser through the normal head unit too. Same price for the option @ £710. I would wholeheartedly recommend DSP on the 1 series but if anyone asked about the Z4 I would advise they go aftermarket.

I was thinking about taking the car in under warranty and complaining to be honest it is that much of a gap between the two systems.

I don't suppose there is access to the equaliser on the non-Nav Z4 through a service menu?? Anyone know? I only want to set the equalizer the one time, not worried if I don't have access to it on the move.

arhhh i wish someone would go to the trouble of doing this in a roadster so i can use the best settings possible as i have NO clue what to use and it definatly needs setting up!! op heeellllppppp!!!

Why not copy the settings in the first post, as a starting point, Beedub? Might not be perfect but will be in the right ballpark.

It looked about right to me, if that makes sense. With everything flat the bass is too boomy and the treble is drowned out a little.

Once you have the roof down ambient noise makes it all largely irrelevant to be honest, especially over 40 or so MPH... :driving:

also have applied these settings to my MR and i have to say they are a very very good setup, real nice crisp sound without that echo noise i was getting!!! op great work here, these settings work very well on the roadster also.

I will give these a go, thanks :)

I used to use a customised version of 'jazz' but recently I found that things were tighter/less echoey with the dsp off and just +3 on bass and treble.

Only posted so I can keep track of this thread and do it myself in a few days. Hope it's worth it, have DSP off nearly all the time.

Blocks are + or - either side of middle line, just set it up. Sounds pretty good to me.

Added this to my Zd too, but have the bass on +4 and treble on +4 on the main console. Sounds amazing, also have my iPhone on the Rock setting sounds great with 80% of things!

Thanks!
