DSP Adapter questions

I really hope someone can help me, I'm close to the end of my tether! Basically I've successfully installed a Dension Gateway 300 into my Z4. Unfortunately I wasn't receiving any sound from the Dension. I then realised that I had the DSP option which Dension state is incompatible with their products. Great... After searching the internet I came across a number of products which claim to convert the Digital signal into an Analogue one which the Dension should be able to use. I've watched a number of install videos but for the life of me I can't work out where the 6 pin plug is meant to connect to. I understand you wire the unit to the existing amp but I'm not sure where it connects to the Dension. Does it replace some wires in the loom or something? If someone has fitted one of these I would greatly appreciate some guidance. I haven't yet bought the DSP converter because I don't know whether it's actually what I need, I'm so close to giving up and going back to just using the single CD player. :headbang:

This is the product I've been looking at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DICE-ACC-BMW-DSP-Adaptor-Kit-for-BMW-5-7-Series-M5-X3-X5-Z4-Z8-/321413706168?_trksid=p2054897.l4275

I have a spare DICE DSP Adaptor.
The exact one in that ebay link.

It isn't more than a few months old and is in perfect working order.
Gladly sell it for £40 + postage

It comes with a 6 pin to rca converter, which is what plugs into the actual unit.

On the main dice units, the cable comes with a 3 pin and 6 pin socket.
this adaptor then plugs into that 6 pin socket from the main dice loom and gives you the RCA sockets to plug into the dsp converter.

any help?

Thanks sk93, I actually have a Dension 300, would the 6 pin plug into the Dension loom then? There's no 6 pin socket on the Dension unit itself. I'm guessing you won't know all that much about Dension if you already have the Dice unit! Once I work out whether I need this, (or at least how to use it!) I'll take you up on your offer. I presume this means you need to route the cable through to the front of the car, how easy is this to do and what is the best method? Thanks for your help so far, I'm slowly piecing it all together!

its very easy to route the cable.. lift the back wall carpet in the boot, and you'll find a "hole" in the far left corner.. if you then remove the speaker grill from behind the passenger seat, you'll find the cable can be routed through that hole into that speaker cubbyhole.
then it's a case of routing it round under the plastics - remove the three screws in the speaker cubbyhole, then the two screws on the passenger side of the central tunnel (but with the handbrake and gearstick..)

with all five screws removed, there's enough give in the plastics to be able to route the cable up and under them, right up to the front central console.

don't suppose you're nottingham based are you?

I've been speaking to a guy up in Manchester who has been looking into my options and unfortunately it looks like the Dice DSP adapter isn't compatible with the Dension 300. Basically my only option is to remove the Dension 300 and install a Dice Mediabridge. I'm waiting for his quote but fearing the worst - he's based up in Manchester which is a pretty big distance - I'm based in Hereford or Oxford depending on the day. I never knew it could be so hard to get USB input into a car...

can you take a few pics of the denison and it's wiring loom for me?

I can tell you now that it is possible to get it to work with the DSP adaptor. 100% guarantee it.
However, what I don't know is if it's a straight plug and play, or if you'd need to solder some wires together (maximum of 4).

But trust me - it's definately doable and you definately do not need to buy the DICE Mediabridge (which should cost around £150 btw).

(How do I know this? I've examined pretty much every inch of the audio system in our cars and know how everything wires up for the cd changer unit.
the DICE and DENISON units are a replacement to the cd changer, which means they must use the cd changer interface. If we cannot get this to work, I'd be flabberghasted!)

ok - looking at the installation manual for the denison 300, it looks like you plug the connector into the cd changer slot of the headunit connector.

can you confirm this is the case?

If so, the solution is dead, dead simple and requires three relatively long bits of wire, some solder or terminal connectors, and the DSP adaptor kit.

Once again I'm showing my ignorance but I'll try to explain what I've done!

The Dension comes with a wiring loom, one end allows you to connect the existing loom into it and the other one connects where the existing cable was. It looks like this http://www.e46fanatics.de/attachments/car-hifi-multimedia/6178d1300476067-dension-gateway-300-eingebaut-radiomodul.jpg

If you are able to solve my problems then I would be indebted to you for life!

The quote has come through - £495 for parts and labour (including a large amount of petrol costs as expected). Plus the Dension would have to be removed and sold on (no doubt at a loss) so if I could use the DSP kit with the Dension I would be saving a LOT of money!

£500 is astronomical, especially considering fitting the DICE unit can be done in under 30 minutes!!

right... are you free this weekend at all?

ok..
If you can cover some of the fuel cost and the £40 for the DSP adapter (assuming we DO get it to work, which we will  ) I'm willing to pop down Sunday and see about getting this to work for you?

I will gladly cover your fuel costs and take you out for a nice meal if you can get it to work! I'll PM you :)

I'd settle for a beer or two and a burger.. but sure

PM me your address and number and we'll sort out a time etc :)

Ha, well it just so happens the pub I had in mind does something called 'The Ultimate Burger'. I'm sure there are better burgers but it's pretty damn good! PM sent.

Why don't you put the Denison in the glove box? Then you don't need to remove any if the rear trim and is easy to access if you want to plug and unplug

The Dension is up front (currently behind the radio because I don't think I'll need to access it in the future) however the amp is in the boot. The DSP converter needs to be in the boot with the amp but a cable runs from that, up front to the dension unit (which needs to be plugged into the radio). It's the cable running from the converter to the Dension that needs to go under the trim. At least, that's what I think we're doing, sk93 may tell me otherwise!

correct - possibly.
it depends on a few factors, but I believe that will be the solution.

we'll nail it Sunday
