DSC unit problems - goodwill?

Anyone have experience of BMW covering repair work/parts through goodwill or either of the issues below?

My 2008/57 3.0si convertible (FBMWSH, 43k miles, no warranty) brought up the DSC, ABS and general warning lights all at once last week, I was away over the weekend but they were still on when I got back so got it into the dealers (Eastern BMW, just outside Edinburgh). Anyway, the DSC unit has failed (quoted £2200 for part and labour) - a lot of money for a car worth <£10k .

The dealers are submitting a goodwill claim to BMW for the DSC unit but said that diagnosis work isn't covered which seems off, I phoned BMW UK customer service and they said a claim could be submitted after the work had been done, however. It's waiting on a response from BMW about the DSC unit.

Hopefully it seems like a strong case for goodwill, I don't think major parts like these should be failing with this age/mileage/service history - it's only money, but money I'd rather spend on something else :(.

Good luck with the fix Andrew. I'm no expert but tend to think when a dealer mentions that a unit has failed and needs replaced it's the simplest thing for them to do (and most expensive). With so many lights showing could it not be a more simple electrical problem that a good auto electrician could trace - might be worth spending some money there before the thousands that the dealer wants.

I presume your battery is OK ? It's well known that a dull battery can through up all sorts of faults - have you charged it or maybe able to swap one temporarily ? I wouldn't assume the dealer has checked this.

I know that's all simple stuff that you've probably thought of but I can't ever recall on the forum another DSC unit failing like this. How does the camshaft wear sensor manifest itself ? Is it only readable by a dealer's diagnostic unit - seems a heck of a coincidence to show at the same time as the DSC unit "failing" Surely the two are completely unconnected ?

Anyway hope you get a result and can make it on the run on 13th !

 hope its sorted soon. Agree with jaxZ4 check the simple stuff first, sounds to much of a coincidence for 2 parts failing at same time.

Bit of a coincidence them coming on that the same time. I would be very surprised if there was a fault in both. I would get the DSC sorted and go from there.

Camshaft sensors are not an expensive affair - on previous cars the replacement was plug&play, the sensor quite cheap. The symptoms were a 'coughing' engine and momentary 'check engine' flashes. I don't know how it is with BMWs, but on other vehicles it never required the removal of the head.

As for the DSC, I second the opinions above. Check the battery, check the ABS sensors (worn, grubby), check the connections. In the worst-case scenario, especially with the age of our cars, I'd go to the breakers and source a similar unit off a twin BMW.

I had an issue with tge dsc unit as well. The abs and dsc lights were coming up for about a month and my mechanic said we can send the unit to a specialist in the Uk to recondition it. I almost did that until suddenly the problem dissapeared since the weather temperature went up here in May. Its been 4 months now with no issues. My mechanic removed the fault messages but the problem appeared again a few times for the next few days until the problem stopped. I say take your time as it may be something else at the end and if there is a problem get it reconditioned as it costs about 200 GBP . If you search i send another guy the website of the recinditioner in the uk i cant find it right now

The problem with the DSC will probably be the brake pressure sensor that's internal in the the DSC unit..

You used to have to change the full unit but now BMW offer a repair kit for around £300.

See what is said and how much I may cost but it may be prudent to pull out of the dealer and get it to a decent Indy.

I would have thought £500 would solve this issue..

Cheers guys, BMW agreed to an 80% goodwill contribution on the ABS/DSC unit so that whole job was £750 :|. As for them wanting to take the head off to check the camshaft for wear, I've had the car back this week and I'm not quite sure if it's sounding more tappety than before and maybe the HVA issue, but I'm going to get a second opinion on that.
