DSC module fault

The newly acquired Z has the triple light DSC fault. It only started a couple of days ago (seller) and the battery was low. Hoping that after a good run it would charge the battery and can then reset the codes.

It was already replaced in 2017 at a cost of £1700 ex vat so surely not already gone again.

Any chance or am I fighting a losing battle here

3.0si, I haven’t read the codes yet but on my M when I had those lights I had to replace the DSC unit

Ah ok, well check the codes but I have found in some cases it's a dodgy yaw sensor.
Is the carpet wet under the drivers seat?

PS. At your age it could be a a possibility :D :poke: :D

Carpet bone dry, checked that as the chair rail is rusty so perhaps has been wet

I had a doggy wheel speed sensor that was triggering the light trifecta. An afternoon spent removing a rusty Allen head bolt and all was good once more. Oh, wallet was £90 lighter too...

Codes should point to a duff wheel speed sensor if the cause is down to one of them, often the case of the dash lights illuminating.
If you have a scanner that can look at live data you could monitor them to see how they are performing. Rusty reculter rings that the sensor picks up from are also worth checking and cleaning.

Think he has two threads going on this. Had front left and rear right sensor codes along with a load of other stuff too

If battery was low and car is a new purchase I would automatically treat myself to a new one. Recharging might help but will not get it back to full capacity.

Battery is from 2021 (just checked), but it will certainly be something on the list.

If you can clear it and it doesn’t come back on until you start moving forward and after a few metres then my money would be on wheel sensor.

Yep, exactly that. When you go to second gear the lights come back.

Plan is to get a couple of sensors and try that first.

Any preferred source of good sensors? Ebay has wildly varying price ranges.

Would also like to change the retaining allen bolt as no doubt this will be a clud of rust, can that be sourced as well or is that a dealer order?

I would say any of the known good brands: Mahle, Melye, Lemforder, Bosch, ATE, Hella etc.

This is the bolt you need.

The eBay ad shows it fitting elsewhere, but I got the number off Realoem.
Note that you get two for that price.

Definitely soak that bolt well beforehand with a penetrating oil. Then take it very easy removing it. If that snaps it's a right faff. I took the hub off to drill it out and ended up finding it easier to fit another hub. (Only cos I had one)

Great - thank you, ordered the bolts (took 2 sets as no doubt I will need them again).

Will look for the sensors for any of those makes. I am very worried about trying to get those bolts out as they will be rounded in no time

My mistake was thinking they were allen key hex heads not torx. Years of crud made it difficult to tell.
You have the advantage of a new bolt in your hand to match to exactly the right bit before you start.

Looking at the rear sensors, all makes I see have different lengths of the cables. How important is the correct length for that?

I've been lucky enough not to have to change a rear one. Obviously they need enough length to allow for suspension travel but I'd assume even the shortest ones must do that, so longer ones just allow a little more freedom for routing. Not sure if they are different lengths each side though?
