I had problems with my x5 and have read that in low voltage conditions the steering angle sensor can throw a wobbly. try with the engine running turning steering lock to lock. then back to centre.
Its supposed to work, even if it didn't work for me.... because its the yaw angle sensor which is all part of the DSC system.
Give it a go, you have now't to loose.
