As a side note. I've just bought a 22 year old Peugeot 205 GTi as a weekender. It has 115 bhp, 0-60 of who knows and a top speed of who gives a feck..... having driven some highly exotic and extremely fast things over the last couple of years I can hand on heart say this car is in the top 3. Go figure.
You will have some fun in that  I remember back in the day struggling to keep up in quicker cars the way they handle is out of this world, enjoy :driving:

I had a 306 XSi and that had the same handling characteristics as the 205 GTi. It was so much fun balancing lift-off oversteer with on-power understeer around roundabouts. In fact, the 135bhp 306 was much more fun than the 225bhp Audi TTC that replaced it.

leemzr , know just what you mean, my friend had an e reg 1.6 gti for a while , that little thing flew , one hundred and twenty like nothing. a great fun car and a classic, the 1.9 must have been really fun.

inkeys , whats shocking ? Honda imo ripped off a ferrari to the last detail when they brought out the nsx, rounded off the edges and turned it from a sports car into a lexus, and as for the s2000, honda should stick to making lawn mowers or employ some humans in the sensory department instead of robots !!!  :poke: :fuelfire:  :tumbleweed:

 All valid points I guess. Do so want an NSX regardless. IMO they logically took cues from some classic metal and created their own version. Evolution in action. And who hasn't ripped off Ferrari?!

They do make good mowers though I'll give you that :)

A lot of 205 love here. Think I might need to give my new wee toy a thread of it's own.

Anyway, back to the point (kind of). My comparison was to sort of illustrate that a car that is considered low performance now a days (much like the GT86 which would have been a beast in 1989) can still be rewarding and fun. On the limit is on the limit.

I would also like to suggest that mad4slalom is banned from ever posting anything on any car forum ever again :poke: Robots! Senna had a hand in that car. I would say it has more soul than a GTR and even to this day you have to appreciate the precision and level of engineering. Admittedly it does look like one of those Chinese knock off cars they showed on Top Gear a while back. I'd still have one in my Leno garage though.

More 205 love here. Ex 205 GTi 1.9 owner. Although it was wayyyy too many years ago for my liking! I loved that car. It was my first real "performance" car. I've never driven anything since that tried to provoke you to speed more!! It always wanted to be revved!

Yes the 205 was the daddy back in the day I had an xr4x4 at the time & everytime I came across one on the twistys I was left for dead! I was never lucky enough to drive one but from following them they looked like great fun  I even had a play with one in my old Cerbera & the bloke driving the 205 didn't let my good memories down, we exchanged appreciation thumbs up!

Where did the company go wrong? they used to be arguably the best manufacturer of FWD cars...how the mighty have fallen their desirability nowadays is down the toilet imo :(

Very true. They don't help themselves either by wheeling out a 205 GTi to park next to every new offering at press launches etc. They've done that with both the 207 and the 208 along with the line GTi'm back. Inevitably it wasn't and I doubt it ever will be. Even Pistonheads ran an article pleading Peugeot to stop claiming they could better their greatest achievement as it will never happen. Not the article I'm talking about but i thought this was interesting, reading between the lines it seems the designer of the 180 knows he is defeated before the car was even launched. Another failed press event that ended up more about the museum car.

In saying all this. i think the RCZ is a lovely looking car. Much nicer than a TT. Not sure how it drives or even if it comes with any interesting engines.

Sorry for taking this off topic Inkey. Seems us middle aged men need a place to go to reminisce.

Interesting article thanks mowflow  I agree with you about reminiscing its great to look back I always enjoy doing it, plus cars were a dam sight lighter back then which equalled more fun in my eyes. :driving:

It is almost the weight of a GT86 lighter than the new Golf Mk7 GTi (200kg in it which is quite a bit but I'm trying to keep this relevant :D )

Was passing the Toyota dealers and tried the GT86, with fond memories of two MR2s and several other Toyotas I've had I was eager. The looks are OK but not eye catching, but the killer is it's got no sense of occasion. The engine noise was not special, the interior felt poor rather quality for the price and surprisingly cramped (I'm a large 6'3") but it drives well, plenty of poke (despite being only 200bhp ) and felt good on the road.

Maybe an interesting alternative to some other Coupe's or a Gti but it's not a car I'm itching to own. Damn I was hoping Toyota had come up with the goods :(

A few road testers have also criticised the engine note, I think if I take away my love for powerful cars the GT86 is certainly a refreshing change & does give the punter another option which can only be a positive thing. :driving:

Update to the thread. Met my mate with the GT86 today for lunch. Turns out he's been having issues with the gearbox and it's in for a second diagnosis. Won't easily find second and sometimes wont even go into second at all. Quick Google search finds its a common problem and after the dealership tried to fob him off a few times saying he'd get used to it etc (!) he's gone ballistic and elevated to Toyota UK. Awaiting feedback but asked for either a replacement or his money back.

Totally taken the shine off the purchase for him at the moment and Toyota Bromley customer service has been woeful so far. Took over a month beyond the delivery date for the car to arrive initially and then it was the wrong interior, so he had to wait another two weeks. Hasn't had a lot of luck.

I didn't say to him he should have bought BMW as it would have been like me punching him in the face.

The GT86 has just been put on my company car list.Guess what I'll be ordering in about 2 months time. An interesting choice each weekend, the GT86 or my 911 C4S. :D :driving:

You mean an easy choice leave the GT86 at home & take the proper car out! :driving: joking aside that will be a nice combo to choose between, enjoy. :)

Did they used to run a really fast corolla years ago? I think the name rings a bell, i used to love jap motors then they launched the gutless GT86! :P
