Driving to Italy...

Hey everyone, I'm planning on driving to Italy (Bergamo near Milan). Plan so far is to go via Düsseldorf and Frankfurt to visit mates and then do the long stretch from Frankfurt all the way down to Bergamo. Not sure if I'll do it all in one day but was wondering if anyone has done anything similar and has any recommendations for nice roads on the way. Motorways are quick, but boring, so a little deviation may be quite nice. :driving:

No but I need a full report when you're back as I'm more than likely doing this next year except I'm going to Lake Garda. (Unless the Northern Lights/Norway cruise wins out!)

Yes, I've done this trip a couple of times. Brenner Pass from Austria into Italy is spectacular, and then get off the motorway and do some of the brilliant mountain roads, through Ponte di Legno.

I'll be in Bergamo next week, but sadly picking up a Ford Focus hire car :-(

Nope, but will be doing it next year, so keep us posted when you get back!

My only advice, having spent the past 2 weeks in France on a motorbike tour, sometimes motorways are a necessary evil. Personally I'd rather spend a few hours on the motorway just getting there, then once you've reached wherever you're staying for the night, finding some nice roads to go for a spin/hoon. But you might want to take it easy and use smaller roads all the way there, just be aware that it'll take you a hell of a lot longer to reach your destination!

Thanks everyone, I will let you know how it goes when I get back, really looking forward to just "hitting the open road" and having a change of scenery for a while!

Sounds like you have done this route a few times? What are you in Bergamo for, holiday?

Yes, holiday with family down on the Med in a rented 'villa'. Bergamo was the only cheap flight I could find! Looking forward to the drive down from there, even if it is in a focus 'or equivalent', whatever that means!

What crossing are you taking?

We blasted out 730 miles from Zeebruge to Bourg St Maurice (French Alps but near enough Italy) in a l-o-n-g day in our campervan: basically staying within Netherlands/Belgium/Germany/Switzerland all the way down. It was a 16hr drive though inc stops. Just to give you an idea of time required for long journeys, although I daresay you'll make "progress" on the autobahns better than we could...

Not quite sure what route I'd take from southern Germany/Switzerland into Italy for your destination though.

Sounds as if it will be a great drive, Marco - whichever route you take! :driving:

Just remember to take lots of pics for us forumites stuck in rainy Britain! :(

We did this as part of a European send off tour for our 911 a few years ago. Autoroute through France down to Basel and again through the top part of Switzerland, still great scenery on some of the Swiss autoroutes and the best service stations in the world. Choose one of the amazing mountain passes over the Alps, we went over the Great St. Bernard Pass. Check the weather reports, as there was still a least a meter of snow either side of the road in late May when we went over.

We then followed the Eastern costal road around lake Como through Milan and then down to Tuscany via Maranello. We did this part of the trip down to the Milan area over a couple of days as we didn't hit France until late morning on the first day.

Which ever route you'll take, it's a great drive.

Cool, thanks everyone. Getting excited now! Catching the Ferry from Dover to Dunkirk, then off to a mate of mine in Düsseldorf for the night. Then off to another mate in Frankfurt for the night, then heading down to Italy from there, no plans yet on what Route to take. Thanks for the info "Z4-35i", the pic has whet my appetite - that's exactly the kind of road I'm looking for!

The way back at the moment is completely open......so keep the recommendations coming. I'll probably give myself about 2/3 days to get back from Italy to UK.

Makes me want to plan another European tour with the Z4. I'd love to take in a few more of the alpine passes, particularly the Col du Nivolet,
