Driving Roads - UK Road Trip

Guys and Girls,

Always want to do a driving holiday so I am starting to plan a UK Road Trip Holiday this year (June / July) and want you to let me know of any good driving roads on route.

My Plan is:

Leaving Kent, if I plan if early enough (4am?) I will head straight through London onto A1M or M11 (Not sure yet). Now the plan is to blast up to York for an overnight, then into yorkshire dales (found a couple of roads that look good online). Then another blast up to Edinburgh for 1, maybe 2 nights in the city to see the sites. Then heading over to the A82 (Skyfall Road), another overnight somewhere then back down maybe through the lake district.

I have a very blank route / timescale (5 - 7 days) at the moment so please post any worthwhile driving roads (and Tunnels  ) and any good B&B's (Dog friendly) in areas I will be hopefully staying.

Thanks All

Rob :D

Well from Kent you wont have to drive through London .......try that new fangled tunnel @ Ye Old Dartford....the rest sounds like a great idea , some good driving roads up ta north

TBF there are a lot of great roads in the LD and YD.

Few in the LD, Kirkston Pass, Honister Pass and Hartside are all awesome drives.

Here is Kirkston

few years back early one morning did a trip straight (ish) through London (maybe a few detours!!), unless there has been some major changes. Going to be early to miss congestion charge and rush hour. I may decide not to do this due to having to leave so early!!

The benefit of doing the tunnel is that you get to listen to the exhaust and blow the morning cobwebs off.

I'd also recommend a east-coast-ish trip north, and west-coast-ish back south, as then you can take in some of the lovely Welsh roads before doing a quick sprint back along the M4 home.

Already got a couple of Welsh roads, BUT don't think I will have the time, so if all goes well, that will be another one, south coast, then in to wales

Miss read your first post as 'can't drive through' sorry. going to do the tunnel on the way back :driving:

Woodhead pass and Snake pass are great roads..They can get busy though if you hit them in rush hours...Before 7am or after 7pm is great...

Also Winnets pass in Castleton(Great places to eat/drink) is absolutley stunning in the Hope Valley..

Depending whereabouts in Wales your going the Llanberis pass(A4086) is a cracker,As is the A470 to Betws y coed...

If you're planning a south wales trip, may I suggest a run up through the A466 from Chepstow to Monmouth. It follows the Wye River, and has some fantastic riverbank views....! Few pubs round Tintern too.

take a trip over hardknott pass. its not a top gear thrashing road ..... lol but it is very pretty.

pretty much any road in north wales. :D the b5105 road from cerrigidrudon to ruthin is a good example.

personally i wouldnt bother with snake or woodhead. too short too much trafic, 50mph speed limits for alot of it. much better alternatives.

North of Edinburgh is the A93 Braemar Road. Well worth a blast if you can

Just to threw in a few alternates. Think about starting out via the M4 to South Wales. Then driving up through Wales. Much nicer than slogging up the A1M. Then a bit of boring Mway up to the lakes. Then as much of Scotland as you can find time for. (It's rather good up that way.) Then back down south via the North york moors & maybe even a little bit of the potteries.

Just to threw you off completely. I reckon the second best place to drive in the UK, after Scotland, is North Devon. Some fantastic and light traffic roads.

Have fun planning and more fun driving. :driving:

Thanks all for the advice and suggestions.

Really looking forward to planning it and driving it.

Wales and South West is going to be its own trip to do it justice :D

IIRC the southbound carriageway is over the bridge and norhbound is through the tunnel (except when the bridge is closed due to bad weather) so you'll need to use the tunnel on your way north (or cross the river three times on the way home :P )

I'm off to the Lakes on the 15th. Can't wait to get back on Kirkstone and go and find Hartside.

Cheers for that Tom, I was looking for a new road or two to drive.

Doh!! Posting with out thinking

This is a decent/scenic route once you get upt north.

Struggling to link googlemaps at work for some reason

York
Scarbrough
Whitby
Pickering
Helmsley
Osmotherley

then A66 all the way to the lakes.

Southern Scotland, drive the A703 from Moffat north towards Edinburgh. Superb road. North of Edinburgh it just gets better. Given time, drive the road to the Isles from Fort William to Mallaig, then get the ferry across to Skye, a loop of breathtakingly beautiful Skye then over the bridge and head north again up the West Coast. If the weather is fair, you will wonder why anyone goes abroad for a driving holiday...it's just a bloody long way from Kent!
