Driving in Germany

I have been living in Germany since August this year. And I must say that I have been pleasantly surprised at the overall good driving experiences here. The Germans drive hella fast, and are very assertive yet professional. The skill level here is pretty high. You see a few knobs here and there but they are the exception. And I have seen very few drivers lounging in the fast lane on the autobahn. (a huge problem in the states) If you run out of gas on the autobahn and the polizei come along. you can get a very stiff fine for being an idiot.
I wish the folks in my homeland(USA)would take driving as seriously as they do here. I think a fair amount of american drivers barely realize that they are even in a car, even while behind the wheel of said car.
Don't mean to be so down on my fellow citizens. But that's just how it is.

It's been a learning experience for sure. The one thing that I don't like about driving here are the position of the stop lights at an intersection. The light is directly above the stop line on the road. And are near impossible to see unless you set your chin on the steering wheel and look straight up. With nice weather and a roadster it's not so bad.

Have to agree with you in regards to State side drivers, Please do not take this as "having a go" at the Americans, Just the driving I have witnessed over there, Especially on the freeways, I guess the clue is in the name as it is literaly a free for all, Poor signaling (almost non existent) and overtaking in all lanes :? freaked me out.
When I was in Salem I was stuck in a Jam but had stopped to keep a right turn Clear to allow oncoming traffic to turn in, The guy behind actually got out of his car to call me an Ass wipe, for the sake of being able to move forward ten yards, But have to say apart from that I have always been made to feel very welcome in America and been shown Fantastic hospitality.

On the other hand I was asked by friend to pick up a friend of his from the airport and it was his first trip outside the USA . When i dropped him off he had to pull his finger nails out of the dash, thanked me for the lift and apologised for the girly scream as I went round a large R/about, He had never seen one before and thought I had gone a bit mad

My wife was the same upon our first autobahn drive. Geez! Honey, Do you need to drive so damn fast.
My response. Hell Yes! It Is the autobahn.

Girlie screams and fingers in the dash! Good on ya. You must have scared ten years off him. You really haven't lived, until you have looked over the edge and stared death in the face. Then give em the bird.

Generally speaking, Americans tend to be slap you on the back, say howdy, Lets go have a beer sort of folks. Highly informal bunch we are.
But once we get behind the wheel of a car. We promptly put our ass hats on and go from zero to bitch in one second.

Cheers

I agree most Americans are terrible drivers...
...and driving in Germany is maybe the best place I have ever driven.

I won't comment about Spain and France.... :silence:
