"Driving gently" in a warming up context.

I'm curious about everyone's warm-up routine. On my S50 back in the day I'd keep it below 3k revs util the oil was >50c.

On the Z4M there seems to be a 'variable redline'. Does this encourage people to use more revs when it's cold, or do you stick with a lower, self-imposed limit? Is the variable redline a BMW recommended maximum? Or do they still say keep revs much lower when cold?

What's your habit?

The consensus on here is to keep things under 3k until the oil temp gauge is showing it hot. The variable gauge around the rev counter is driven by the water temp.

Unless you have Santa Pod at the end of your drive it's not exactly a hardship to stay under 3k.

I try to keep the revs as low as possible until the oil has warmed up. Unfortunately this takes ages, so I pretty much don't bother taking the M on short trips.

It is a nightmare with the n54, the gauge doesnt even budge until >70c

Like others ,I keep it at below 3000rpm until it's properly warmed up.....all lights out and settled at 90/100, on temp gauge
It does take. Wee while though :tumbleweed:

Yup takes a good few miles of warming gently through and bring the oil up to around 75 degs before I'll take it into Vanos territory. Still plenty fast enough when bimbling any how. :D

I keep it under 4k, gentle acceleration and don't labour the engine by short shifting too soon.

The oil isn't going to flow properly until the 65-70C mark (stuartinzg, that's why the E89's oil temp gauge starts at 70C). Until that happens you want to keep the gears relatively low but not let the revs get too high. Generally keeping the revs under 4000, ideally 3500, rpm but not going below 1750rpm in any gear above 2nd. Plus don't above 30-35% maximum acceleration for the revs you're at.

Followed a mate's M135i round a few roundabouts last week. What amazed me was how quickly it warmed up compared to the ///M. He'd hit temperature, had a nice little hoon and gotten home before the needle even lifted on mine! Maybe about 10 mins running time. I don't know whether this is true, but apparently the newer engines have some tech to circulate warm oil more effectively. The other thing I found was that I am SLOW.

Like others, I ignore the lights and keep it under 3k until the temp gauge hits 80-ish.

the Z4M is a N/A engine right? So that means no turbo to heat the oil quickly. Turbo engines also are a little odd with heat soak. If I dropped int to my local supermarket on yjr way home from work I'd park up with the oil temp in the 70-75C range, by the time I got back to my car (engine off) oil temps were around 10C higher :?
