Driving from San Fran to Santa Monica

I've been lucky enough to visit the canyon, and spent an hour of my 30th birthday in it, after a wonderful heliopter tour.

The more I hear you guys talk about these things the more I wish I'd booked a longer trip!

senwar, you've got a load of geography to cover. Take in what you can....enjoy the journey as it is overwhelming at times.

Cheers 20

Its something I'm really looking forward to (and I have 'drive across parts of the US with an RV & also via Harley on my to do list!)

Really hope the weathers good - really can't wait to do this, and envious of people living in such a location!

If the weather is bad, just stick it out for 30 minutes , it will change.
:D

Nice one!

Car now booked - went for the convertible. Have had a sebring and a mustang before so will be happy with either.

Not counting down. At all. Honest.

8 weeks on Thursday....

I think you have a wonderful trip planned. I get to drive that area quite often and I always look forward to doing it again every time. There is just something about being near the ocean and the waves that just click for me. The ocean temps are quite cool on the west coast, about 65 degs F. I don't care much for the sand though. The rocks out in the surf will have sea lions on them in the northern part of your trip. You may even see whales and sea otters as well as seals. The otters like to hang out in the kelp beads along the coast. I hope you enjoy your trip.

Ask away, Just hope I can help.

If you want to see whales here on the central coast, they usually go December to March timeframe. We have had some Orcas of late though. For the northern part of your trip, September/October is our indian summer. Can have some quite nice days with less fog than the summer time. Cruising through Monterey is a great area for otters. The coast run from Monterey south is my favorite part. Some really stunning vistas. Pacifica, just south of San Francisco, reminds me a lot of the type of scenery that you'll get down by Morro Bay. But then, I haven't done this run in a long time. Gotta say that it is unforgettable on a motorcycle though.

I'm planning to do a bit of a 'wild hogs' road trip on a harley when I hit 40 (3 years). Might add this onto my route list!

Just resurrecting this thread as off in a few weeks.

Have decided to leave SF by 9am at the latest, have a nice drive down to Monterey, down the 1/101 and to San Luis. Still aiming to get to Santa Monica for about 8pm, so we've got 11-12 hours planned.

Any tips in Santa Monica? Any great restaurants? Whats it like for safety?

Also, any other tips for SF? Its out 5th wedding anniversary whilst we're there so fancy going out for a nice meal or something. We've got our Alcatraz (night) trip booked and are also going to see the UK band James whilst we are there at the Regency Ballroom (which is great for an old James fan like me and my mrs are).

I am mate yeah. Bought two new 8gb cards specifically for the trip. Hoping to get some good pics, and aiming to get a good golden gate bridge one, which i want to frame and put up in the house in black and white.

Can't wait and am counting down the hours. Just wish i'd booked longer or was taking my own motor! As long as i get a good car tho i'll be happy.

So what are your plans from Santa Monica, if I may ask? That is just 30 miles north of me. I know you are traveling and all. If you would like a tour or lunch/dinner, let talk.

Nice one Bob - cheers.

Not got any specific plans yet other than Sunday 5th - Pier for the Special Olympics day. I've also been 'told' I've got to go to the following touristy stuff (by the t'other half!):

Disney
Hollywood Blvd/sign
The Viper Room (a morbid one but the mrs was a massive fan of River).

Also fancy a trek to San Diego and possibly Santa Barbara if doable. Any other recommendations?

I'm hoping to put a bit of an itinerary together by the weekend so we've got stuff planned. Will give you a shout then and hopefully take you up on your offer if you're free.

Do you mean this Hollywood sign?
