Driving for the hell of it, RFT & SPG

Being a lovely sunny day and having not a lot to do I decided to go for an aimless drive along the coast with no real destination in mind. My car is a 2003 3.0 manual with 108's, Bridgestone run flats and sports suspension. I drove around 250 kms on a mixture of very windy and narrow mountain roads, motorways and faster country roads. I've had my car now for around 6 weeks = 5k kms and thought it might be useful for new or prospective owners for me to post the details of the drive. The first thing is the runflats. I have no doubt that the drive is improved once they are binned and I will seriously consider it when the time comes to replace them. The thing is that I have driven on all types of road surfaces and had I not read about peoples complaints I would never have thought about binning them. On my drive yesterday which was quite 'spirited' I wasn't annoyed by them at all and found the drive really enjoyable. For those about to buy a Z4 and worried about the runflats I wouldn't worry too much as they are not that bad in my opinion. As mentioned before though I don't doubt that removing them will improve the ride. The second was the MPG. I zero'd the computer and returned around 37 MPG which is pretty impressive for a 3.0 sports car. I wasn't driving like a lunatic but was having some fun with the car on the open roads. I'm still amazed with the fuel economy on this car.

Overall I am absolutely delighted with this car. It is a joy to drive everyday and I am always looking for excuses to get in again, in fact if this post stops abruptly it means that I'm in my car again :D

I've owned the Boxster S, Z3 2.8 and recently driven the 295 HP Boxster S and Cayman S and would say that although the Porsches are marginally better in handling & steering the Z4 is not that far off. It has exceeded my expectations. Anyone thinking of getting one don't delay!

At the end of the day it's the Smiles Per Gallon (SPG) that really counts and this one is pretty impressive on that scale. So impressive that I am going to jump in the car again and go for another drive...

Hi Moodhead - Sounds like your having some fun. I just wish I had my Zed on the South coast of Spain. I'm down there as often as possible and the one place where I need a softtop car I always have a hire car. :headbang:

All being well I should be in Gaucin in 3 weeks time :)

Hi there, Gaucin is not that far from me, around 45 mins along the coast towards Sotogrande. When I road tested the Cayman S I took it to Gaucin, you can see the writeup and pics at http://www.dolceguide.com/motoring/dolce-guide-road-tests-the-2008-porsche-cayman-s-in-andalucia.html

I know what you mean about having a roadster here, I've had to suffer driving a Fiesta 1.4 diesel for the last two years and enough was enough! Having the Zed here is just brilliant, little traffic, virtually no cameras etc etc. You should drive across at some point in the Zed, it would be a real blast and chance to give the Zed a good run :D .

Keep a look out for me if you're on the coast, it will be the guy in a Sterling Grey 3.0 with a big grin on his face :D

Good taste - as you'll see from the signature I'm in a 3.0i ,Sterling Grey too.

I'll be seen sat in a cafe in Peurto Banus a couple of times admiring the best cars and boats in the world..

You too have good taste! I love the colour, glad I got it, I was originally going for black but this one came along with a great spec and once I saw it I knew I wanted it. I know what you mean about Puerto Banus, I pass there every day on the way to the office and see so many Astons, Ferrari's, Porsches, Lambo's it's crazy. One time I just walked from one end to the other end of the port and counted over 9 Ferrari's alone in under 10 mins! It's a great place for car watching and the boats aren't bad either. Have a great time when you are over :)

Welcome to the forum :)

Glad to hear you are enjoying the car 8)

Michelin ZP are far better in terms of ride than the bridgestones :D

Welcome to the forum from the other side of the pond! I'm surprised that no one has informed you yet that
:worthless:
