Being a lovely sunny day and having not a lot to do I decided to go for an aimless drive along the coast with no real destination in mind. My car is a 2003 3.0 manual with 108's, Bridgestone run flats and sports suspension. I drove around 250 kms on a mixture of very windy and narrow mountain roads, motorways and faster country roads. I've had my car now for around 6 weeks = 5k kms and thought it might be useful for new or prospective owners for me to post the details of the drive. The first thing is the runflats. I have no doubt that the drive is improved once they are binned and I will seriously consider it when the time comes to replace them. The thing is that I have driven on all types of road surfaces and had I not read about peoples complaints I would never have thought about binning them. On my drive yesterday which was quite 'spirited' I wasn't annoyed by them at all and found the drive really enjoyable. For those about to buy a Z4 and worried about the runflats I wouldn't worry too much as they are not that bad in my opinion. As mentioned before though I don't doubt that removing them will improve the ride. The second was the MPG. I zero'd the computer and returned around 37 MPG which is pretty impressive for a 3.0 sports car. I wasn't driving like a lunatic but was having some fun with the car on the open roads. I'm still amazed with the fuel economy on this car.
Overall I am absolutely delighted with this car. It is a joy to drive everyday and I am always looking for excuses to get in again, in fact if this post stops abruptly it means that I'm in my car again
I've owned the Boxster S, Z3 2.8 and recently driven the 295 HP Boxster S and Cayman S and would say that although the Porsches are marginally better in handling & steering the Z4 is not that far off. It has exceeded my expectations. Anyone thinking of getting one don't delay!
At the end of the day it's the Smiles Per Gallon (SPG) that really counts and this one is pretty impressive on that scale. So impressive that I am going to jump in the car again and go for another drive...
