Driving convertibles damages your ears

Link didn't work but I found the article under BBC health news. Add in a noisy exhaust and it's no wonder I'm a bit deaf! Still worth it IMO. :)

Wow, that kind of story really makes me think that the BBC is going down hill!

A) There are links to other articles saying smoking, golf and a night out are all bad for hearing.
B) I'm fairly sure that driving down a motorway with a decent stereo pumping out will do more damage (the voice of experience talking?)
C) They suggest wearing ear plugs whilst driving! That is one of the most stupid things I've ever heard - you wouldn't hear any interior warning sounds, sounds of other motorists, horn sounds etc!

On the positive side, some lucky 'Researcher' got to try out a load of convertibles and blast them down a motorway... perhaps they should suggest researching the affects of sunbathing on your hearing!

Ear plugs only cut ceartain fequencies and not all noise so perfectly safe and as you stated most people would have the stereo up that loud they would'nt hear the warning tones anyway, as an aside I've been wearing earplugs on my motorbike for donkey's years the noise inside a crash helmet on a bike at 70 is about 100db way above any industry compulsory protection level.
I would also go as far to say it is something I have considered doing in the car especially on the motorway with roof down.

when i lived on the approach to gatwick airport 9 miles away we were subjected to noise levels above 90 decibels on a regular basis, 1 plane every 60 seconds night and day, sometimes when it was windy the noise was excrutiating and despite recommendations fron the WHO nothing is done about it. because of those levels of noise i now have tinnitis and have since moved away as i found it impossible to sleep and it was affecting my health badly. so i think i will continue to use my convertible with the noisy exhaust with the hood as much as i can, and the harley with the noisy exhaust. at least that noise can be called enjoyment unlike the screaming jets!

I suppose going slightly deaf is good for us roadster drivers - makes it easier to ignore the shouts of tw*t, flash-c*nt and pr*ck when you've got the roof down at 4degC... :D

(there's always an upside to everything...)

Exactly... the report could have easily been on the potential damage from heavily customised 1.2 superminis with thumping drum and bass soundtracks, but where's the fun in that! In fact, with the roof down, sitting next to said vehicles at the traffic lights is probably more risky than going for a blast.

Had a ride in a very early Caterham (80s vintage) the other week. The driver had brought along ear defender kind of thing and I was like 'what are those for - the exhaust cant be that loud'. Wasn't long before I was wearing them - couldn't hear the exhaust over the wind noise :o

Pah.
My old car:

2 bike engines with their straight cut gearboxes, straight cut gears in transfer box and noisy diff. Plus loud exhaust x2. And no screen..
That was a noisy car! 8)

What a load of bull....
I've been driving convertibles all my life and my hearing is perfect...
Ahhh...nuts the dog is in my face barking... :?
Someone must must be knocking at the front door... :o

I'm currently in the middle of a study on the affects of Strippers and Pole Dancing on my hearing. So far I don't seem to hear any ambient sounds while observing said dancers. Long term affects may include loss of hearing my wife.

I happened to be privy to some research along the same lines. For me it was in a crowded pub and two hot blond girls started making out shirts half off and everything. Didn't hear a sound there either.
(not even exagerating)
