Yes - I've heard of several being replaced. They can clunk as the rubber deteriorates

Actually I think mine needs doing when I get time to look

thanks for the replies guys.. I have never heard of them needing replaced on the z4 - done a load of research and found nothing.

cj10jeeper - I know youre pretty mechanically minded, would that item no.1 that I linked above be the worn rubber part you talk of and the culprit of the clunking do you think? any idea of the type of job it would be to fix and could a novice tackle it?

Not actually taken mine off, however my informed 'guess' is that if worn it would appear as either a vibration at certain speeds or more likely a knock/clunk as you go on and off power as the drivetrain tightens up and takes slack up in the donut.

yep clunk on and off is exactly right in 1st and 2nd gear. getting quite annoying now. no vibration at all.

would you think there would be much work to getting the driveshaft out? thinking of puting her up on a set of ramps and seeing could I get at it.

I've had my doughnut done at my local indy.

I'm on around 75k on an 03. I didn't notice any issues but he said the rubber was starting to perish - the indy is fairly sound and I believe him.

Think it was around an hours labour so nothing major.

Job I'd want a ramp to do as you'll have to drop the exhaust system off then probably a heat shield to get at it. Other than that should be a simple job.

yea cant find any info with people doing this on their z4 but for the likes of the e46 and other models they usually drop the exhaust and heatshield. Just have to grow the balls to give it a go myself :|
