Drivers seat first aid box for storage

Been reading all about the box, bracket and elusive bolts... and for all my trawling the threads I can't find a definitive answer to one question I have...

Once the box is fitted on the drivers side, can you get the drivers seat to it's lowest height, or is movement restricted? I have tried comparing lowest heights of the drivers seat with the passenger seat with the first aid kit under it - and it looks the same, but thought I would ask to get a definitive answer from the knowledgeable folks here.

For reference I have sports seats.

I have a quote from Cotswold BMW for £18.74 (inc VAT + P&P) for the box, bracket and bolts - does this sound about right?

It makes no difference to any adjustment on the seat. I have boxes on both sides on ///M sport seats.

Of course it's designed that way to cater for RHD and LHD cars :)

Not a stupid question and apologies if my response read that way :oops: I was justifying why it had to be designed as side neutral
 
BMW parts seem alot cheaper in the UK
i would happily pay £18.74 for the first aid box, my dealer wants $110 for the box and bracket.
Leather Z is an option but $30 + $40 postage is still not cheap for a small additional storage space, id be happy if I was you
 
i am pretty sure after fitting mine my seat will not go as low down - the motor def stops as the box hits the floor... not that is bothers me too much as I would never have my seat that low - same as the passenger side - the motor stops as the box hits the floor.
 
Well for £20 and a couple of scuffed knuckles it's worth a punt - if I can't get the seat into a position I am happy with I will take it off and sell it on here to a shorter person :wink: :D

Right - job done.

Parts:

Ratchet from socket set
1/4" socket
T30 Torx head from a screwdriver bit set

Fitting time:
25 mins

Cost:
£18.74 including VAT + P&P from Cotswold BMW in Gloucester - delivery time 1 day - top service.

Method:
Put the seat on the highest setting you can get it on, all the way back with the thigh bolster pushed in.

Pre-cut the threads in the frame first by screwing them into each of the holes - then remove them again. If you don't do this you may struggle getting everything lined up as well as screwing it in. Since you are sticking you head into the footwell, with poor lighting and tight access - it pays to try and reduce variables.

Fix one front screw and leave it loose so that you can move the bracket around. Then fix the second front screw.

The screw at the back is a bit tight under the cross bar for the bolster adjuster, that's why I decided to leave this one to the end. Logic was that by the time the first 2 screws were in the bracket would be in the correct position for the rear screw - meaning no need to line it up hence one less thing to juggle. With my socket setup it was a bit of a tight fit to get at the back screw, but perseverance paid off. If you have a shorter 1/4" socket then you may get better access on it.

Simple job - you need to be a little supple to get in, up and under the seat - and not swear too much when you keep dropping the screws :) . Box is a reasonable size for sunglasses, sat nav etc.

The seat does go down to it's lowest setting.

Glad you got a result and confim as stated that the seat movement is not in any way affected :thumbsup:

You could have undone the 4 torx holding the seat down and raised the front end to give access room

Don't forget to line the base and sides of the box with thin foam or towelling so key, glasses, etc. don't rattle, scratch, slide

That's the best bit advice I've had for a long time!! It saved me hours of heartache :thumbsup:
It was still an awkward job - not difficult, but an extra hand would have helped to hold the box in place while the screws were located - nevertheless its in now and I think its a good value extra.

It does add extra weight though... to enhance performance > wrap in carbon and reduce the weight and increase your power to weight ratio...

Martin, great information! I bought the box from a stealer two months ago, but have been unable to fit it, as the box and bracket came without the screws. Then went to two different dealerships - both were unable to determine the part number for the screws on their system despite studying numerous E86 and E46 diagrams. In the end they just gave me a hand full of screws to try out, of which none worked. Screws from my local hardware did not fit either.
Am on vacation now, so will only know if these *magic BMW screws* are available when I get back to civilization in a week's time.

EDIT: Yip, the screws were available from the dealer and most importantly, were the correct part. :thumbsup:
Torx #30 driver used to fit the box this afternoon. Found it a bit of a challenge to work under the seat, but then I am not the handiest mechanic around.
 
Well, having a first aid kit was really great. That looks good for me and it will be better if I will know that it is working well. Anyway, I am glad that I saw that picture here.

Assuming not an attempt at humour.... then it just provides an ideal storage box under the seat for sunglasses, keys, small camera, etc. Lined with something it's non rattle too.
