drivers mirror hot to touch

okay, so just back from a sedate drive across Wiltshire and noticed that the driver's mirror glass is hot to the touch. Checked the offside mirror and this was cool. The heated windscreen button was not switched to on.

Parked up in the shade, switched the car off, let the mirror cool down, fired up the engine and noted the mirror getting hot again ... any thoughts on what might be causing this?
 
They are on permanent, mine hot all year round. Stupid idea, better to of had a switch to turn them on and off.
 
They are on all the time. If passenger side cold then that's the one that's not working and will require some further investigation.
