Drivers Ear Rattle? - Roof Cables?

Evening all,

I've just picked up my first Z4 and driven 150 miles home.

All good! - surprisingly not too crashy! (prob due a suspension/bush overall though!)....

The only grumble is a rattle from the drivers ear - first I thought inside the door card, but it sounds more like two cables/keys rattling together
just about my head?

Could this be the roof cables rattling against the frame?

Any ideas or experience of similar?

Hoping an easy fix - can the cables have the tension adjusted?

Cheers,

Scott

Hi there. When I first got my Z4 several years ago now I had exactly the same rattle you describe. Initially I was convinced it was in the door card somewhere but my wife when riding in the passenger seat said it is definitely coming from the hood over the drivers head...weird :?
Anyway, upon further inspection I discovered that the small plastic quadrant (circled in red) was cracked and partially missing on the drivers side and very loose on passenger side. I believe it is a deflector to stop little fingers getting entangled in the folding mechanism. I removed what was remaining on the drivers side and sprayed t'other with some GT85 and it's never rattled/buzzed since and with no effect on the hood operation either  Classic & Sports Car – BMW Z4 Buyer's Guide – 04.png

That was indeed the culprit!.....drivers side was in two halves and 'tinkling' on the hinge mechanism!...

The wonder of forums/owners clubs!

Thanks again!
