drivers door won't stay shut.

Slight issue...

the drivers door won't stay closed, doesn't seem to latch in.

tried to spay some wd40 in the latch, hasn't made any difference.

If I put the key in the lock, the Pin on the door frame goes up and down.

Unable to lock the car with the keyfob.

If I pull the door handle it doesn't sound the same as the passenger side.

Any ideas? Local BMW specialist wants £85 to take a look, an hours labour... 2 week wait...

Possible that the door actuator is goosed or one of the Bowden cables is stuck ‘open’

Can you insert something like a pen into the clasp/mechanism to see if it will lock and reopen with the handle

You mean not like a finger like I have done

Usually less painful

if i push a pen in and push to the right it locks, and then will unlock with the handle

But not when the door is shut? Sounds like it's not completely pushing the catch over then. Try loosening the ring on the b-pillar and moving it out a tad. If you don't quite nip it up tight then it may move into a better position as you slam the door. If that works, tighten it there.

I thought little Dutch boys liked sticking their fingers in things? :poke:

tired to adjust the part on the b pillar, really tight, but moved it as far right as it would go, still the same.

I took a look at the passenger side, and there is a "clunk" and its locks in sooner, the drivers side doesn't make this sound with a screw driver.

There should be a definite ‘clunk’ and movement

If its not doing that I wonder if it’s not fully latching in the internal mechanism

Which could be the actuator failing or something else causing the mech to not latch

If it were mine I’d pop the actuator out for a gander

thanks, going to order an actuator just in case it is that, and then take the door panel off for a look.

If you haven’t done one before it’s not the easiest job to get the actuator off and out of the limited space

My top tip is once unbolted, with your hand in the door holding it, move it down and twist it so it can come out the lower aperture of the door

haven't done one before. Looks like lots of t bits needed, do you need a socket too for anything? Limited on tools here.

Will it close sufficiently for you to drive to Lincoln ([ref]bigwinn[/ref]), or Attleborough, Norfolk (me) ?

Always welcome here I’ll happily help

You’ll need screwdrivers and t25 Torx to get the door card off
Something to re seal the membrane with like butyl tape
Small fingers to pop the Bowden cable out of its seat
T30 to undo the actuator
You’ll need to remove the outer handle so a long screwdriver and a t25 to remove the door handle carrier

I think that’s it

all fixed, the doorlock had moved, there was a screw missing!

thanks enuff_zed :-)
No worries. I should point out I shared a video with a few of the gang on here and it was Stuart ([ref]bigwinn[/ref]) with his eagle eyes who noticed the the key barrel was a tiny bit off vertical.
I found a spare allen-head screw to fit into the lock assembly to hold the barrel tight and once it was aligned the door behaved itself.
