Drilling piano black trim

Hi, I’ve been offered some piano black trim however the ‘airbag off light’ hole would need to be drilled in the centre console.

Is this something that can be done or would it damage the piano black surface?

Thanks for your help!

It shouldn’t be a problem, start with a 3mm HSS drill bit and then Gradually increase the drill bit up to the size You need.

Use a pilot drill then a steeped cone cutter

Cover the area with masking tape. Mark out where you are going to drill the hole, centre punch the point you want to dril, drill a pilot hole then carefully drill it out to the size you need with the cone cutter.

They have the hole marked on the underside already. So all you need to do is cut it out, put the trim upside down and ensure it's protected (old clean cloth of some sort). Drilling won't be enough as it's not just a "round hole" you will need to file or dremmel as well.

Or ask yourself how much you value the airbag off warning light.

Good idea and if it wasn’t for the fact that I make regular use of the isofix mounts for my daughters seat then I would consider it but it’s a handy reminder for me to turn the airbag off.....!

I've done it on one of m old cars, as said before start with a small drill and work your way up. I used masking tape to protect the Black Piano Surface from scratches that could occur during the process.

Take your time and all should be fine.

You’ve got to remove the centre console. The trim piece is held on by about 30 screws.

Thanks for the info! Are there any good guides showing how to remove the interior trim pieces on here that you can recommend following?
