Drifting a Z4

mine is automatic, very good tyres and i'm not turning off the traction control, it still spins so easily lol

you cant really drift a Z4 except for the M. Without LSD you will have to rely on being more "hardocre" to swing the rear, makes the car suffer and does not seem like fun. :( LSD Pls :P

Fifth gear did Z4C vs TT Quattro show and they drifted Z4C in that

May be you need the weight of coupe roof to drift? :poke:

Just about!! Good video though. - Well anything that kills 8 mins whilst at work is gonna be half decent to start with :)

I went to Oulton park and we took the Z and the 350Z. I was pretty useless but it was great fun, did several 360 degree spins, spent a lot of time on the grass, but i felt much more confident about controlling the car afterwards. It was easier in the 350Z, for some reason it was much easier to break traction and control it. Well worth it and the tyres hardly got worn. Been and watched a few pros do it and they make it look so easy.

took the coupe to a drift practice day last year at santa pod, it was brilliant! however the fine sporting set up of the Z means it is harder to engage in a drift that can be be maintained. my missus seeing i had the drifting bug and also for fear that i may i do some serious damage to the coupe tracked down another bmw that we take to DWYB days [remember insurance is void]. it is good to have a car that you can drive hard and not worry about hoovering up cones in and getting delaminating rubber stripes on! i take an E36 325 with a welded diff , hydraulic hand brake and bucket seats.

i recommend everyone has a go, tyres are relativley cheap, costing £19 for a pair of part worns inc. dispossal of the spent pair.

see you there

It is a bit harder to drift without a limited slip diff, you need to be more forceful I think, and what you get is more a slide with a spinning inner rear wheel than a drift proper...

Normal Z4 3.0i can go sideways and slide nicely enough though, but it's more a flick and power slide than a balanced power oversteer drift thingy :D

I went somewhere deserted last night with a friend and managed some incredible long slides, was kinda stunned how easy it was to hold it, but still all pretty low-ish speeds. Trusting the LSD is going to hold you is hard, but once you're balanced it's bloody brill.

Only problem was in one good long drift, in flicking back straight the gear lever came straight off in my hand

often thought of this myself, just can't think of the right place

I've done it lots on damp grass fields (dads farm), and the car is easy to balance, but tarmac and grip makes things happen so much faster around the transition points. Ie, all too easy with an open diff to end up fish tailing as the spinning wheel re-grips and generates a yawing force the other way, and on it goes :D

I'd really love to try on some damp and dry tarmac areas, but it's hard to find a decent venue where it is appropriate to do it!

Yep.. I wasn't even too confident trying this at Bedford where there's huge run off.

Snow + Industrial estate = temporary safety.

i got a voucher for a track in york, they do a drifting coures so i am going to have a go

It's not Elvington airfield is it? If so you'll have no tyres left after 30 minutes *

* go on, ask me how I know

They'll wet it down.

Also, I think it's the old concrete tiles that are abrasive, and the rough tarmac on old concrete parts. The main tarmac areas should be fine on car tyres... but most of the track courses run over both parts :(

Dave

Club msv also run a drift day at oulten park fairly regularly which tickles my fancy, they use a wet track to save on tyre death. I'm surprised you didn't want to put the back out at Bedford though Andy, some of those corners just beg for a bit of tail happy action!
