Drifter Sentenced To Death

Except they don't live in a democracy, don't elect their politicians and generally have no say in their laws. Nor can they leave if they don't like it.

but he knew the law as he was drifting, so he should have not drifted

From the video, he was driving like a nut job on a public road. In the UK he would have been given life for that. Obviously in the UK we dont chop heads off for that kind of thing. Sadly, less than 100 years ago someone could have been given the rope in the UK for a similar crime

Fair enough. Let's agree to disagree on the death penalty, and agree the driver was a fuckwit

Agreed

Adamski - can you stop changing your avatar mate ? Confused the hell out of me for a sec there

Edited to say - I do like it though !

The guy deserves every thing he gets.

I was witness to a woman hitting a motor bike at 80mph, coming down a slip road, a few months back. The bike was stationary. Apparently she was arguing with her husband. The biker was dead before he hit the ground. I have the pleasure of the memory replaying in my mind regularly. She got 340 hours community service, I was disgusted. I wish the bitch had lived in Saudi. Apologise for the rant but it a hard thing to see first hand.

In the US for the driver that would likely be a manslaughter charge which would likely carry a 5 to 20 year jail term. However, that looked like an organized event and in the US whoever organized or promoted something like that even if it was by Twitter or something like that they would have some serious legal issue as well.

+1 All of the above points... love the new avatar, Adamski!!

It's very easy to just blame the driver, but the story also says "In videos posted to YouTube, large crowds are seen gathering by the side of the road to watch drivers skid their cars". Don't the spectators also bear some responsibility?

And for those saying that the driver knew the penalty - are you also happy with the link on the page to the Related Story "Iran plans to execute two for consuming alcohol"?

this is a very sad story.

While i dont agree in the death penalty atleast it is a deterrent, unlike in the uk where yobs feel like they can rob and loot with minimal consequences.... Even a life sentence here is a joke... 20 years and they are out!

I guess when you live in a sh*t hole, what else is there to do?

I think you got it turned around. If me and a few hundred friends gather in the Arizona desert. It's not likely that an off road race will suddenly appear. And just because people are standing around "hoping" to see you drift. Doesn't force you as a driver to drift.

I don't have a problem with the Iranian's either. As they have freely chosen to live under a Muslim Dictatorial Theocracy. Iran once had freedom under the old shah of Iran. But the folks didn't like some of the corruption. And put a religious dictator in charge. And the folks have paid a heavy price for their decision. But, They freely made it. It's up to them to change it if they don't like it.

Big Dog, I think you need to try harder in history lessons. Iranians haven't had the opportunity to choose their leader in a way you or I take for granted for a very long time!

Do you really understand the political situation in Iran?

How exactly do you think that the people of Iran "freely" made this decision?!

Again, what mechanisms do you think are available to the people of Iran to effect this change?

Sorry but if your wreckless selfish inconsiderate behaviour takes the life of an other and you know the consequences of your actions could land you on the executioners block then you deserve all you get. There are certain laws in Saudi which we in the west may consider barbaric, but I always remember an interview Terry Wogan had with one of the Saudi crown princes where he asked him to basically justify their laws. He answered by saying We had 2 murders last year and 3 rapes with a handfull of robberys in the entirity of our borders, How many did you have.
If some fuckwit took out one of my family this way I would be asking if I could be the guy who swings the axe. Good on them for not falling to the whim of the minority who are against the death penalty but who always shout the loudest.

No one will EVER convince me that aboloshing the death penalty was the right thing to do, it wasn't, and neither was removing corporal punishment from schools. Yes I know innocents were hung but in this country there is a war on crime and it is a war we are losing, in every war innocents will die.

Rant over

I am pretty much with Nosa on this, as posted above.

I think you should also be very careful judging what is 'barbarism' by Western, Christian, standards. There are many people in the Middle East protesting against the oppression that we can pretty safely say exists - against women, democracy, freedom of speech and so on. But do not lose sight of the fact that Sharia Law is very much embedded in the Muslim faith - and I don't see anyone protesting about being Muslim. Do the Saudis themselves object to Sharia Law ? I think that even with a more free society the faith Laws would remain because of their very nature.

Likewise, when one of your relatives or even you finds yourself on the wrong end of a rope or needle when you're innocent, we'll be sure to remind you and ask if you still feel the same way

My children were brought up properly and would not be in a situation that would lead to their assumed guilt, but likewise stuart when some 17 year old parks their car on your childs head and runs away, remember to turn the other cheek and pat them on the back.

Edit,

Silver lining, one of my relatives is executed when they are innocent, think of the compo pay out when they are found innocent years later.
