Dreaded lights in rearview, the cop kind.

So I took the Z to work this morning. Was a lovely 70 degrees out, at 4:55 AM, and proceeded to head to work in what I thought was going to be a serious, but a little bit fast drive.

So there I was driving along and low and behold, I came across a slow roller on the two lane highway posted at 65 mph. I was only doing 75 when I caught up to this person.... You know the type, Way under posted speed zone so I stayed a little close waiting on the passing zone. It came up, I dropped into 3rd and hammered the peddle, around before I hit forth and smiled.

Well, until the cherries on top lit up. :headbang: So I slowed down and pulled over. Yes I just passed a cop. :?

He walks up......scribbling s**t on his pad.
"Nice car you got sir."
"Thank you."

"Do you know why I pulled you over?"

"Actually no, you was 10 under the posted speed, I flashed for pass and blinkered before i went around and back into lane, so guess I'm lost."

He looked up from his pad, smiled and said, "You have a back license plate light out." He scribbled some more, tore the sheet off and pushed it at me.
"This is just a warning sir, please get it fixed before I see you again."

I got out and went to the back and yep sure enough the right side was not lit up.
"Sorry Officer, I''l get that taken care of."

(wipes sweat off forehead.)

There was a time when you would have got pulled for a number plate light out in the UK. These days it seems you can have a headlight out, brake light out and rear light out and they don't care!

And that's just on one police car!

I had something similar on my bike one night on the way home from work years ago.
11.30pm I joined the Kingston Bridge, M8 heading home. It was dark but nice and dry. I was on my 900R.
I stayed in the inside lane but a car came up beside me and just stayed in my peripheral vision. I could see there was someone gesturing at me so after a few seconds I dropped a gear and wound it on.
Another few seconds later i looked in my mirrors to see blue lights and though F**K.
Pulled over, got off the bike and waited for the cop to get out his car.
He asked me if I knew why he had stopped me.
I said speeding I suppose.
He said no, you have no tail lights, where are you going as you cannot continue without them for your own safety.
I told him I had 20 miles to go so he followed me off the motorway to a petrol station where bulbs were bought, fitted and I was on my way.
Lucky :)

Nice from the OP - that's the whole point of policing in my view. Shame we don't have any traffic cops left here...
I suggest you go one better and get the LED tail lamps from the one series, search on here - you get 2 whole new units and new connectors, should be about $50.

Not a jobsworth - speed is such an easy cash cow but those actions above could have made a real difference to your safety

Yup, they are human. :D

In the last few weeks (haven't been pulled for anything in at least a decade!) I have been virtually finger wagged twice! Like the OP, sped up to overtake and the pulled over, only to see the BMW I'd just gone past was plain clothes old bill and the lights start. :headbang:

Thankfully, he just pulled up along side and gave me the slow down hand signal and went on his way.

a week later the same thing happened in Scotland, over took a dawdler and pulled back in. next thing I know the lights are on, same again, pulls along side, slow down signal.

Glad they were just warnings and thankfully I wasn't driving massively in excess of the speed limit.

I now think every dark BMW is plain clothes...... sigh

Talking to a few Police friends of mine in GMP, traffic cops are universally hated within the force. You would have thought its PSB (internal affairs/ police police for the uninitiated!). But no, White Caps as they are called internally are a "special breed of w@nker!" That came from a Chief Inspector. What made it particularly funny at the time he said it he had forgot one of the lads we were with's Dad was a retired traffic cop, his face was a picture!

Seriously though when I was younger I used to get pulled all the time for driving a 205GTI, long before MID they used to think as a 19/20 year old I was either uninsured or I had stolen it. Honestly I didn't mind that so much as it was a legitimate concern. Although one particular jobsworth pulled me for a slight crack in a number plate, which really was over the top.

Thee days I seen instances like a battered old saxo literally crabbing down the road in front of a police X5 and they totally ignored it! How times of changed.
