Drag - Roof up / Down

I was wondering how much extra Drag a Roady suffers from with the roof down as opposed to up? I had a play with a 64plate S3 earlier and had the roof down. Almost identical on acceleration, just wondering if there would have been much in it with my Roof up?

Definite difference but would probably only make a noticeable difference at higher speeds?

If you reach the point where it's making a difference, you probably shouldn't be there!

My bald head compensates for the lack of a roof. It's very aerodynamic :D

probably more about the 300 bhp s3 and most likely DCT... on a roll very hard to match. These new hot hatches are on a new level now-days.

Gearbox makes a massive difference. Went on a run this weekend round the west coast with my mate who has a brand new Cayman S with PDK. Very little in straight line speed but the Cayman would pull a little bit ahead with every gear change. The PDK is a very impressive box. Far, far better than BMW's DCT.

I've got PDK in my new macan S... its freaking ACE. Rowing gears costs time but its the best experience for the driver and takes real skill....

my time at the sprint circuit was just bettered but a revo tuned golf R DCT. run of the mill hatch that was pulling 3.9 to 60, could change gear faster and did it mid corners with ease, while I'm thinking about changing gear and shitting my pants due to rwd and high HP he's flat out pretty much everywhere i can't be.... haven't run this year but looking forward to taking the top spot back, which i will.... but ill be doing it the hard way.

I totally agree, they're getting pretty good what with fancy gearboxes and very torquey with the new age of Turbo charging. Though i still love my M, its a proper old school sports car and its like a go- kart to drive sometimes when pressing on 8)

yeah the z4m is a proper old school hot rod..... no other way of putting it! its awesome!

drag is only really kicking in at high speeds really, I'm looking forward to getting back to the sprint track t see if my times come down with the hardtop off, as the car is lighter or the better aero of the HT. This year I've been holidaying too much and spending all my time with the family ! off again end of the month so thats 3 within 5 months :? :? I'm broke now! lol!

The Z4M felt Stone Age compared to driving the new Cayman S. Everything felt older and outdated on the Z compared to the pork. Would I have the pork over the Z? No chance! The pork bored the pants off me. As a daily driver that is also very, very quick, it may be hard to beat. For a car to blast about in at the weekends, I think the Z is very, very hard to beat. I'll let you know wednesday...trying out a K20 Elise :-)

I can't help you with figures but driving at Castle Combe yesterday I didn't notice any appreciable difference in top speed with roof up or down (just over an indicated 130mph). It was too hot with the roof up!

I just read on the RAC website that the Bentley Continental GTC tops out at 195 hood down, 200 hood up.

Judging by how "breezy" it was with both the top & windows down at "just" 140 yesterday evening I really don't think you'd notice it!! :D :D

As if by chance I had a little play with a new dsg S3 last week, I had the roof down, once I was in 3rd I could easily pull on him and once in 4th it would be easy to pass with a long enough straight, made me think of this thread straight away :)

Makes not difference at all...I've hit the limiter roof up and roof down in Europe...

+1 on my monthly visit to the ring I have done the same thing…topless and with the top on is the same V-max (limiter) :P
