Downpipes for E89 n20 - sDrive 20i

Hi there

Recently bought a 2014 20i - and starting my way through all the customary mods.

Had it remapped - and it feels a lot more powerful - looking at what I can do next.

My local garage suggested downpipes -- so after some googling, i've found myself a little confused.

I've found two options -
- VRSF Racing Downpipes E89 2011+ BMW Z4 sDrive28 https://www.vr-speed.com/vrsf-n20-race-downpipe-for-2011-bmw-z4-sdrive28i-e89.html
- InoxPower DOWNPIPE BMW Z4 SDRIVE20I E89 N20 https://inoxpower.com/en/downpipe-bmw/downpipe-bmw-z4/downpipe-bmw-z4-sdrive20i-e89-n20#/cat_200_cell-yes

Does anybody know if the VRSF downpipe would also be compatible with the sdrive20i?
- I cannot seem to find an exact VRSF one, but I understand both 28i and 20i use the n20

Appreciate if people can point me to a thread / share insight into which downpipes give the best 'bang for buck'

28i and 20i downpipes if stated for E89 are the same…other N20 downpipes for other models will not fit..

Your issue with the VSRF one is it will fail MOT..

I assume the other one will pass..

I have both a VSRF you can have and a sports cat Evolution Raceworks

https://www.vividracing.com/-p-151450419.html in a ceramic black finish if you are interested..

Sports cat gives maybe 5 BHP if you are lucky but makes a nice sound through the stock silencer..

I was running a Supersprint decat pipe with a stage 2 remap but as B21 points out above, it’s an MOT failure. That’s because the N20 engine only as 1 cat and that’s in the down pipe unlike the 35i and 35iS engined Z’s which have primary and secondary cats. The Supersprint decat pipe was quite expensive c£700 IIRC although does give out a lovely growl to the engine note and allegedly adds around 10bhp.

Sure -- could be interested, how long have you had it?

On the MOT stuff (same about the VSRF) - how hard is this to change out before MOT? Supersprint is a full exhaust system, is it fair to assume this would be a significantly harder 'DIY' job than just downpipe?

The VSRF pipe and the Evolution Werks pipes are about 3 years old…

Both pipes were on the car for about 500 miles so negligible wear n tear .

Changing the decat pipe for the cat pipe my local garage charges me 30 minutes labour so I assume it’s straightforward. You can buy a full SuperSprint exhaust or a separate decat pipe. I went for the latter.

If you dont mind me asking - why did you take them out? And what would you be looking at for them / you are based Scotland?

Hello..I took the VSRF off as it would fail an MOT and didn't want the faff of swapping the downipe just to get through the MOT..

The Evolution Raceworks was part of many high value items that I took of the 20i when I sold it..some things stayed behind cause it was more effort than it was worth...but that, the Quaife LSD were among items that were taken off prior to sale..

Price wise I'd ask about 1/3 of current UK list price plus p+p..and yup in Southern Scotland..
