Double din screen

Just came across this on YouTube and thought some might be interested. Looks like a company has made a double din fit and look pretty good imho.

Hiya pal - this is mine....the company (https://www.audiofile-incar.co.uk/) seem to know their stuff. It looks a lot more flush in real life than in the video and pic above but DM us if you have any questions on it.

It looks great, I suppose the only compromise is losing the middle vents which doesn’t seem like a bad sacrifice.

Gibbon101 are you able to share the spec of the unit and whether they did the fit or you? Is it a kit they sell or a service they provide and install?

Thanks.

Don't have the funds to do this myself at the moment but looks excellent definitely one of if not the best looking installs I've seen. What happens with the pop up Nav screen? is it just disconnected and left redundant?

Looks a lot better than others I’ve seen. Would imagine it would integate even more with a darker colour dash too.
Whats the fit like? Video seems to show a slight gap on the lower lefthand side where it doesn't quite cover. Almost like its not quite wide enough.

That is very nice. I'm not usually a fan of this type of aftermarket screen integration, but this looks very professional.

Do you happen to know if they provide the housing/facia separately (and, if brave enough, you add a screen of choice by yourself), or does it only come as a complete package?

I couldn't find any info for the Z on their site (plenty of other BMWs listed though).

I hope you got an extended warranty on that Pioneer. My double din Pioneer bit the dust after 53 weeks, 1 week past the 1 year factory warranty. Pioneer wanted half the price of the unit to "attempt" to fix it. Nobody local would work on it. So into the garbage it went. What a waste.

How easy is it to get that radio out? In case it needs replacing.

Here's wishing you better luck than I had. That is likely my last Pioneer purchase.

Thanks, must admit it came out better than expected. Yeah i wasn't too fussed about loosing the vents but I know some people have an issue with that. I just wanted the bigger screen and complete handsfree as well as car play so was a sacrifice i would take.

As for the unit itself it's this one:

They fitted it all themselves. I'm sure if you dropped them a line (saying you saw the video of mine and I've recommended on here) they may sell as a kit, but it was an all in one service for me.

Thanks! Yeah it's just disconnected and left redundant they did ask if i wanted it taking out but I've left it in for now as the long term plan was to replace the sat nav with a storage cubby or something....however life and current situations have meant the car plans are on hold for now.

Aye the plan was to change the aluminum dash - this radio chance was the first "mod" I looked into when I got the car and the dash was on my list of things to do to and was thinking of making it piano black to make it more integrated as you say.

Yeah it's odd that it is like that on the video. It inst like that in real life....unfortunately i'm not near the car at the moment (it's currently locked away in storage given I can't go anywhere at the moment) and i've just looked to see if i have a photo but i dont unfortunately. Will try and get a pic of it the next time i'm with the car - I'm not sure when the video was done and if they made another one or made it more flush....it would do my nut in if it was like the video irl! ha

Thanks, yeah i am not normally a big fan of an aftermarket screen and it's the first one i've ever got which is why i went for the professional fit rather than bodging it myself!

I dont to be honest, i do know that he has done at least one other Z4 after mine but I do think mine was the first he had done for some time - like you say they are quite knowledgeable on BMWs and my friend got his E46 M3 done which is how I found them. Im sure if you dropped them a shout they'd be happy to help though.

I'm sorry to hear you had issues. I did read a few reviews on this model and didnt see anything like this but i can understand your fustration. Especially so close to warranty expiry.

It's not too bad, can just remove the front and then unscrew it all - there's an ugly metal bracket behind the black bespoke fronting which can be unscrewed and then can remove the radio. I made sure they made it all easy enough for me to put it back to factory for when I have enough money to upgrade to a M......or maybe i should just get some stickers from eBay to put on the back..... :P

I would love to put a double din in mine, but I don’t want to loose the centre vents and the functionality of them.

Have you thought about maybe getting a single din with a pop out screen? I did think about going down that route but the screen would pop up and block the centre vents so I thought I might as well go full hog with it

Alcon,

I have just had this 3D printed as a prototype, using a design by IamOrion, I’ll send a link to the thread.
I’ll be fitting it to my Z over the weekend to see where improvements (hopefully not too many!) need to be made.

Can send details of the guy who printed it, was under £40.

I've also been thinking about this but like you say, the center vents would be blocked. :headbang:

I wonder if somehow the vents and the HU can be flipped so that the vents are on the bottom where the HU currently is and the head unit is above where the vents currently are, thus when the single din screen pops out it will not be covering anything. I imagine this would be a lot of custom work for brackets / ducting etc though

Be nice to have the double din option so hopefully this works and for under £40 plus head unit money not too pricey either.
