remote was pressed, once last week I could only open the drivers door on the key but the passenger side was firmly locked!!! it's corrected itself now though and all is ok, I think it's an electrical problem?

hmm... i had a similar problem today, only the remote wouldn't unlock either door and it was pouring rain... AND I have a keyhole plug, so it wasn't quickly possible to just use the old fashion insert/twist method. took a good soaking before the door finally unlocked.

since the key is supposed to recharge its own battery, i also assume there was some technical snafu, perhaps with the remote antenna? i recall these often going bad on the TT (weather exposure)... is it perhaps this way as well on the Z4?

Yup, I had the same intermittent problem and took it in under warranty. Same thing happened on my Jaguar XK8 a few years ago as well.
On both occasions it was the door locking module that was starting to fail. It'll start getting worse and eventually fail for good :(

I wonder how much the module/labour costs?

Not sure as I had it sorted on the warranty. I think the Jaguar was about £1,100
